Ramblers enjoy a rare day out in the sunshine of Haworth
MEMBERS of Clitheroe Ramblers’ Association had a rare, sunny day
for their walk in the Haworth area. Setting out from Haworth Church,
the walkers followed the signs to the Bronte waterfalls and soon reached Penistone Hill with its fine views of the
area. The dry, sandy tracks of the country
park gave way to wet, peaty paths as the group crossed Haworth moor and dropped down a steep path by the side of the waterfall. Crossing Bronte bridge, the walkers took the path to Top Withens, the disputed model for Wuthering Heights, and then it was downhill along the Pen nine Way to Stanbury.
HOPING for good weather next month are pupils at one of the Ribble Valley s
smallest primary schools. The Ordnance Survey hot-air balloon is to visit Thorneyholme RC Primary
An old track was followed to a derelict mill, which provided a sheltered stop for
lunch. They- climbed out of the Worth Valley
and followed field paths to Oakworth. A coffee stop was made in the unusual Hold en Park, which is made up of grottoes incorporating tunnels and steps, set round a bowling green. Then it was downhill to the restored railway station, followed by a long, slow climb back to Haworth. On another occasion, the ramblers
walked from Barbon Church to Brownth- waite Pike via Barbon Fell and Bull Pot Farm. They then made for Langthwaite Gill along the Roman road, passing artis tic sheep pens on their way to Bellgate and
back to Barbon. Fingers crossed for good weather in time for balloon visit
School, Dunsop Bridge, on March 16th. Children are now looking forward to see
ing the balloon in action and being given a film show and lecture about the work of the balloon and its crew.

Beef on the bone: MP hits out at ban after Welsh
minister and Prince tuck in ^ . f
LOCAL MP Nigel Evans has congratulated Welsh Secretary Alun Michael on His excellent taste in food after he ate beef off the bone at the St David's
Day dinner. Mr Michael caused a national
debate when he followed the Prince of Wales's lead by eating the beef
a t Monday's meal. Mr Evans commented: "The Secre tary of State has said that 'it's nice to
see it cooked properly'. For the rest of us, it would be nice to see it cooked at all. Perhaps he knows where I can get some - I'll even invite him along for
the meal. "By the Government's own admis
sion, the odds of catching anything from beef on the bone is one in two million. I've said it before and I'll say it again - this ban is an idiotic and bureaucratic measure which is doing immense damage to British farming. 'It is illegal to sell it, but it is not illegal to carry it or eat it - just what
is going on? This Government believes in the nanny state removing the freedom of choice from con sumers to eat what they choose. The Government should go the whole hog and ban smoking, drinking, driving and even walking across the street - there's far more risk in all these things than in eating beef on the bone. "I hope that Alun Michael's taste
test will finally persuade the Govern ment to see sense and to drop this ridiculous ban."

A "BIKE SAFE 2000" campaign is expected to be launched for the local area today in a bid to reduce
motor cycle accidents. Road sa fe ty officers say th a t the
campaign follows an alarming increase in the number of fatal accidents involv ing motor cycles in Lancashire. Seventeen people were killed, several in
the Ribble Valley, and 137 were seriously injured in the county last year. This year's figures already include a Clitheroe fatali

Lancashire County Council and the Lan cashire Constabulary. Commenting on the 1998 figures, a
spokesman said: "It is an unacceptable loss of life, causing immense trauma to the bereaved families." The campaign is being launched a t a
seminar at the Hutton police headquar ters and this will be followed by a pro gramme of activities th a t will run
throughout the year. The spokesman said that the campaign
aimed to team up "key people and organ isations who, by working together, can make a real difference". The main focus of the seminar will be
road-safety training and education. Speakers such as representatives from the health authority, accident investigators and psychologists will be addressing the seminar.
