Blues on a mission with a score to settle against table toppers iSf

CLITHEROE have a score to settle at Shawbridge against league leaders Kidsgrove Athlet

ic on Saturday. Three weeks ago the Blues were in

command against the Staffordshire side, before a poor refereeing deci sion swung th e game in th e Hollinswood Road side's favour. Steve Parry's men saw a 1-0 lead turn into a 2-1 defeat, and he is eager

to set the record straight. The Blues boss is champing at the

bit, and he said: "We can't wait for the

game. "We felt more than a little hard

done to at their place and we are glad to get another crack at them so soon

after. "Normally I don't make public com ments about refereeing decisions - you

just get on with it. "But this one was hard to ignore. "We were winning 1-0 with a Paul

Lynch goal and had subdued them. "But they got a penalty for no

apparent reason, and they got their tails up after that and won 2-1." Athletic have lost only two games

all season and are top-scorers with 46 goals - 10 more than anyone else - but Parry added: "We know they are beatable, and that we are capable of beating them. "If we perform to our ability we can

beat anyone in the league." Parry is sweating oifthe fitness of

hamstring victim Jon Riley, who came off at half-time in the 6-0 Floodlit Trophy demolition of Holker Old Boys last week, while he is hopeful Andy Taylor will return. "Jon had to come off against Holk

er, but he has had a good rest, and hopefully he will be okay,” the Shaw bridge manager told me yesterday. "Andy was rested against Holker with a slight groin strain, but it is

nothing major. "We have a couple of niggles, but

otherwise there shouldn't be any prob

lems." ~ But whereas Kidsgrove are top-

scorers, and have three players in the league's leading scorers list, Clitheroe have just Riley with seven. And Parry is keen to strengthen the

side up front: "There's no doubt about nmisi t s

it - we certainly need to strengthen our striking department. "The search continues - we are

scratching around for a couple of play ers, and there are couple of areas where we need boosting. "We have a couple of players in the

reserves who will come in in time, but they need to get match fitness first. "The likes of.Wayne Howarth,

Mark Stewart, Neil Rhodes and Andrew Cowking, as well as a couple of others, will all benefit the side in the medium term." But it is a case of so far, so good for

Parry, although he feels there is a lot of room for improvement: "We are going through a tran sitio n , and although we are looking to strengthen, we have to continue to get results and

get a run going. "We are looking for a decent cup

run, but we need stability. " W p n r p

from the players, and we are winning games, so we are happy so far. "It is a bit frustrating at times as we could be better in certain areas, but

that will change in time." And the progress of the reserve

team is pleasing: "I haven't seen them yet, but I have heard good reports. "They have had two good wins and

are picking up now. "The balance of the side, in terms of

youth and experience, is right now, and I am sure they will go from strength to strength." While Parry looks to pick up league

points on Saturday, the League Chal lenge Cup takes centre stage at Shaw

bridge on Monday. Second Division strugglers Oldham

Town are the visitors, and Parry is confident of progressing: "We should

see them off. "I saw them las t week agains t

Chadderton, who we play at home in the Floodlit Trophy a t the end of November, and we don't foresee any

problems. "I t is tempting fate, but the cup

draws are favouring us at the moment. "Hopefully that will continue to be

the case in the FA Vase after the week end's first round ties.

man to make his league debut at O'Duffy had converted an earlier

No. 8. Clitheroe won the toss and skip

per Roger Holmes elected to play into the wind in the first half. This decision immediately looked

to have backfired as Montell scored a simple, but unconverted, try after

just two minutes. For the remaining 38 minutes of

the half the teams were evenly matched and on the stroke of half time a Dave Slinger penalty gave Clitheroe a 6-5 lead, after Declan

penalty. With the wind at their backs in

the second half, the men from Lit tlemoor adopted a kicking game and gained an early reward almost from the resumption. Slinger charged down a huge

O'Duffy clearance and neatly side footed the ball into the path of full back Andrew Burill, who gratefully stretched the Clitheroe lead to 11-5. Slinger slotted three more penal ties to complete a solid individual

performance and leave Clitheroe worthy victors. Among the forwards, Wilyman

made a couple of telling breaks and second row Nick Green was unlucky to be stopped following one rampaging charge. The scrummage was solid and won more than a fair share of possession. Unfortunately the line-out, usually so profitable, was below its usual high standard. All in all, though, it was a solid

performance and one Clitheroe can take heart from.

RESULTS Saturday

Castleton Gabriels v Chadder-

A

N outstanding season for Rib- blesdale Wanderers' Martin Briggs was capped when he

25-year-old took home after the presen tation evening at the Mytton Fold Hotel

in Langho. Briggs also picked up an award for the

joint-best fielder of the season after helping Wanderers to runners-up spot. Briggs produced a string of superb

knocks in support of professional Shahid Nawaz - who broke the league batting record - as he himself made 691 runs. Club skipper Terry Braithwaite was

delighted for his team-mate: "It's been a long time since someone at the club won the overall player-of-the-year award, and it is a great honour. "It is voted for by all the other clubs,

around seven years. He has settled down and is playing in a very mature manner. "When he first came into the side, he

"He has been in the first team for

scored runs regularly, but he hit a bit of a lull. However, he has proved to be one of the best amateurs in the league, and hopefully he will continue to play to that standard." Martin is pictured receiving his award

and there is only one player-of-the-year, so that speaks for itself. "Martin had a great season, and I hope he can build on it.

in the Vaux Ribblesdale League, with the title race going right to the wire, only for the weather to wipe out the last day's play. But the club honoured

their teams and individuals for some excellent perfor mances. The best of all came from

f irs t team bowler Mick Dewhurst, who won the Brian Fielding Trophy for taking 7-19 in the demoli tion of Oswaldtwistle Immanuel in late August. Dewhurst also claimed

the first team bowling prize. The Boltons mopped up

the other first team awards, with Neil taking the batting prize and Mark the fielding

prize. Chris Seed collected the

second team batting award, with Mark Hargreaves the pick of the bowlers and Farouk Hussain the most outstanding fielder. For the third team, Paul

Gaskell picked up the bat ting prize, as well as the club's Young Player of the

Year award. Neil Cartledge took the

bowling award, and Daniel

Walker the fielding award. Departing professional

Jonathan Fielding was also given a special award - a sil ver salver inscribed with a record of his considerable achievements at Chatburn

Road. He was also given two

mounted cricket balls to commemorate his feats in taking 102 wickets in 1996

• and 108 wickets last season. On the night, the club's

tennis section also present ed their awards after the club championships. ■ Derek P a r ro t won the

men's singles, and John Dickinson and John Calvert took the doubles title. Pam Bolton took the

ladies' singles, and Judith Bishop and Caroline Ben nett won the doubles. Cynthia Sharp and Mark

Hargreaves won the mixed doubles. Some of the prizewinners
