IT'S party time a t Lee Carter

_<eisure as the Clitheroe health and itness haven celebrates 15 suc-

:essful years. Customers are always assured of a cheer- ul welcome, but this weekend promises to be

xtra special. Vicky Lee, the inspiration behind the "small

rym" off Lowergate, which is now almost a second iome for 420 members, is just as enthusiastic

ibout the venture as she was in 1983. Today the centre boasts 26 staff and a bur geoning list of facilities, including a state-of-the-art gymnasium, double the size of the previous facility, died with all the latest equipment - in fact £24,000 was

spent 12 months ago on extra machines. Open day and night, customer usage is quite evenly

spread, putting an end to annoying queues. With a personal training option available to members

ind non-members, this gymnasium is equal to that of

many of its city counterparts. The oldest enthusiast is an 86-year-old man who vis

its three times a week and the youngest, an A-level stu dent taking advantage of the newly-launched student

membership. "We are offering 40 places a year. All are filled, but we

are considering offering a summer membership," says

Vicky. In future, she would like to work more with young

people, introducing after- school classes. Pointing to recent research in America, she says gym

nasiums are definitely here to stay. Of 50 people under going regular cardio-vascular exercise, 50 jogging, 50 weight training and 50 swimming for 10 years, those weight training showed a higher bone mass density and no sign of osteoporosis and were the only group to show rejuvenated body tissue at the rate of a 20-year-old. "A lot of people are scared of gymnasiums," says

Vicky, adding that she would like to see more people taking advantage. Membership is, she says, equal to a couple of pints of beer a week and a packet of cigarettes. All kinds of people use the gym — and there is certainly no need to wear the latest gear. The dance studio is now housed in the basement of the

adjoining United Reformed Church and boasts a sprung floor and lots of space.

From bums and turns to dance aerobics, jazz dance, .

salsa, ballroom, Latin American dance and Tae Kwon- do taught by British champions Clare and Jason Pussey

- there is something for everyone. The leisurewear shop is a magnet for anyone looking

for the latest gear, with Luhta, Vici Domini and O'Neill sportswear, as well as a host of swimwear to set you

apart on the beach and in the pool. Adjoining are shelves stocked with beauty products,

including Clarins and a new line, Espa, as well as health

prod- NA‘ u c t s ' . designed to ' y r y ....{ >.... put you first.

. * The products complement the

beauty therapy centre, where five fully- qualified

therapists carry out beau ty treatments seven days a

week. Add to that an exclusive

hair salon offering personal one-to-one service with profes sional stylists and there is no doubt that Lee Carter Leisure certainly has something for every

one. The next 15 years? " A lot more of

the same," says Vicky. "I still want to come to work every morning. I thoroughly love it. It’s an oasis within Clitheroe - a love ly place to be." Plans for the '

WHAT’S NEW THERE'S never a dull moment at Lee Carter Leisure.

The last 15 years have resulted in hundreds of Ribble Valley people sharing in Vicky Lee's vision - and feeling

fitter and better for it. From small acorns, mighty oak trees grow, and

utes costs £30 and subsequent treatments of 30 min utes, £25. And, the good news is that after the initial

consultation, people are usually sorted out! When it comes to Ayurvedic Medicine - a form of

herbal treatment - look no further than Anne Green. Anne is about to become the first woman in this coun try to become an Ayurvedic doctor, following years of

study. Ayurveda, a combination of British and Indian

herbal remedies, examines the person, unlike traditional British herbalists, who look at the complaint and prob-

lorn Anne is available every Monday afternoon. The first

consultation and treatment, approximately one-and-a- half hours, costs £38 and subsequent treatments, £18. "A delightful woman. As you talk to her, you can feel
