HE mouth is one of the most expressive parts of the body, adding a unifying finish to the

overall look and it can create a fas cinating focal point to the face. In a similar way to eyes, lips communi cate personality and mood and the colours used for a very defined, painted mouth have a powerful effect on the rest of the make-up.

The type and colour of lipstick cho

sen can change an overall look in seconds. Like blusher, lip colours should complement both skin tone and clothing. Through clever lipstick application,

lip shapes can be altered, changing the whole shape of the mouth and indeed the total look. Before attempting to alter the natur

al lip shape, apply a little foundation over the entire lip area. This will help to camouflage, the natural line.

• Thin Lips Using an appropriate colour lip pencil, draw a line just outside your natural lip line. Then fill in with colour. Pale shades give an impression of a fuller mouth. Finish with a little gloss or highlighter on

the upper lip, which adds fullness.

• Overfull Lips The opposite to thin lips. Draw a line just inside the natural shape. Choosing dark or mid-tone shades will make the mouth recede, whereas pale or shimmering shades will do the opposite.

• Uneven Lips Depending which

lip needs altering, follow the guid- lines from below: Thin lip — draw a line outside natural line.

• Full lip — draw a line inside nat ural line. An immediate difference to the appearance of the mouth can be created by emphasising the "Cupid's bow" or the M in the top

lip. MAKE-UP B e a u t y T h e r a p y S a l o n

Corrective Work for Unbalanced Ups

If the top lip is thinner than the lower lip, extra fullness can be added to the upper lip by pencilling in a new bow slightly above the existing one and then filling in the new shape. If the lower lip is the thinner of the two, the shape should be extended slightly below the existing line. In each case, the new line should be kept within the outer borders of the mouth, as otherwise an unnatural hard look will result.

Corrective Work for Asymmetrical Ups

In this case one side of the top lip is narrower than the other. This may be corrected by carefully pencilling slightly above the narrow side to

give balance. Corrective Work for Full Lips • ;

The appearance of full lips may be slimmed by carefully pencilling in a new line slightly inside the natural one but following the original curve before filling in with lipstick.

CorrecHve Work for Thin Ups

These can be made to appear fuller by pencilling just outside the natur al line, though still following the original curves, before filling in with lip stick.

'7 Corrective Work for Drooping Ups

This type of mouth gives an impression of sadness which may be coun teracted by building up the corners of the lower lip line to meet the upper lip line. A lot of customers show concern with regard to lipstick wearability.

- Eosin is an ingredient found in some lip formulations. Working to

enhance wearability Eosin ingredients "stain" the lips, maintaining colour throughout wear.

For a longer-lasting and more profes sional look, four simple steps are

required • Outline lips, correcting if required with appro priate lip line pencil. • Fill in, using favourite colour with a lip brush. • Blot lightly, using a one-ply tissue and a pow der to matte. • Apply more lip colour, using a lip brush.

The main purpose of lipstick is to impart colour to the lips, but it is also used to accentuate a good lip shape or to disguise defects.
