CLITHEROE pool team were eliminated from the National Inter-League Finals in Great Yarmouth on Thursday in contro

versial fashion. But they travelled home with respect

and pride from their performance and

behaviour. A party of 22 players and officials left

for the Vauxhall Holiday Park, where they were p itted agains t two of the favourites in one of the 32 groups of

three teams. The top side in each group went

through to the knockout stages, but Clitheroe had to take on 1995 winners Trent Trophies from Stoke-on-Trent, and last year’s semi-finalists Western,

from Bristol. Trent played Western in the opener,

and Clitheroe had to wait almost five hours for a 5-4 Western win. Clitheroe th en played T ren t and

despite playing well, lost 3-6, with Alan Gudgeon, Marc Holmes and David Parkinson winning. Clitheroe needed victory in the decider,

and -gain they played some brilliant pool. But three frames were lost from win

ning positions and a hugely controver sial decision knocked them out.

Steve Almond, Clither player-of-the- toumament Alan Gudgeon, Andy Sud-

worth and Tony Clough all won. I t was in the deciding frame where a b iz a r re refereeing decision cost

Clitheroe. Dave Parkinson was on the black, with

his op p o n en t having six red b a lls

remaining. Dave was snookered and had to play off

three cushions to try and pot the black. Dave narrowly missed and the referee awarded the frame and the match to

Western. I t was an insult to lose the match in

this way and Clitheroe deserved the sympathy they received from teams who witnessed the incident. □ A record 46 teams have registered for

the Clitheroe Summer Pool League. There will be five divisions with 10 teams in the Premier Division, and nine

in the other four. The Premier Division will p lay to

. World Rules, and the other four to EPA Rules, as will the Cup Knockout.

New teams include Hurst Green, Read Constitutional Club, Pendle Witch and Millstones (West Bradford). The season opens on Thursday, May 15th. O The Clitheroe pool team is pictured

above (CAT6289). □ Only six points separate the top three teams with four games of the season remaining in the Three Rivers-spon sored Gisbum and District Pool League. Pendle Hotel lost 4-3 against second-

placed White Lion b u t are s t i l l six points ahead clear of the West Craven side and Coach and Horses A, 4-3 win

ners over Hole-in-theWall. RESULTS
