Stocking mask raiders tie up terrified local couple

RUTHLESS robbers have smashed into another Ribble Valley house and terrified the couple who live there. The victims were man

handled into the cellar of their large detached house in Ribchester and tied up by three men in stocking
masks. Now police are asking local
residents and motorists who travel through the area: “Did
you see anything?” Criminals who will stop a t noth
ing to get cash and easily sold items such as jewellery are caus ing more and more worry to peo-
pie who live off the beaten track. There have been several inci dents recently, prompting police to urge re s id en ts : “Ask our advice if you do not think your
home security is sufficient.” The latest victims are concerned
to keep their identity secret. Police at Blackburn, which covers Ribch ester, waited nearly a week before revealing th a t the robbery had happened. They are unwilling to give more details about the loca tion of the house.
The incident was at 6 45 p. m. a
week last Sunday evening, and the robbers, believed to be three Asian males in their early 20’s, broke into the property at the back. Purely by coincidence, they came
across an air pistol owned by the couple and used this to frighten them after bursting into the front room. Cash and jewellery valued at several thousand pounds was taken, and it was some time before the “prisoners” could get free and raise the alarm.
Although the masks hid their
faces, the men appeared to be Asian. One was addressed as
“Steve” by the others. I t seems likely that the robbers
escaped on foot, but had a vehicle, or more than one, available nearby. Police at Blackburn are keen to
hear from anyone who has seen anything suspicious in the Ribch ester area in recent weeks. They feel th a t the robbers may have taken a good look a t the neigh bourhood while planning the raid, possibly calling at houses on a pre
text. Anyone finding discarded items
such as stocking masks should also
contact police. Information can be given on
01254 51212. This is also the num ber for Ribchester and Billington crime prevention advice — for most of the rest of the Ribble Val ley it is 01282 863161.

FIREMEN dashed to a fast spreading blaze at two Clitheroe Royal Grammar School storage
sheds on Sunday. And later police issued a “can-you-
help?” appeal after evidence showed that an arson attack was probably
responsible. Several thousand pounds worth of dam age was caused to the storage sheds and their contents. As the flames took hold, two teenage boys were seen running away and made good their escape,
despite a thorough search of the area. The incident happened just before noon at the
timber sheds, which are close together between the main Chatburn Road complex and the
playing field. A police spokesman said: “A man saw the boys,
near the sheds and wondered what they were doing — then one shed went up in flames, and the boys ran away. So far we are not sure how
the fire was started.” The fire brigade was able to save the smaller
shed, which was only slighlty burnt. But much of the larger one was almost completely engulfed in flames and many of the contents damaged beyond repair. Running hurdles, cricket nets and similar sporting items will cost many hundreds of
pounds to replace. Folding examination desks, as well as some
ordinary ones awaiting repair, were also destroyed.
Grammar school head Mr Stuart Holt said: _ ,, . ,
“This incident is very hard to understand or explain — someone setting fire to property in broad daylight, at a place overlooked by many houses and at a time when people are likely to
be at home. “We are very grateful to those who raised the .
THE wrecked CRGS storage shed (CAT 6884) alarm and to the fire brigade, police, and every
one else who helped. Now we hope someone will come forward with information to catch the cul
prits.” A police spokesman said that the hoys seen were described as both aged about 13, and one
was taller than the other. One had short dark hair, a grey sweat shirt and
track suit bottoms with two white stripes, and the other boy was wearing a black check shirt
and blue jeans. —> A 3[i©; I v ' / ^ /A r x i ^ R T ? r i 5 ? r i ^ D l ■
