Billington runners overcome the odds in mountain marathon

VERCOMING injury and th e p u n ish in g course, Bowland fe l l -ru n n e r s S a rah Brow n and S im on S a r g in so n from Billington finished as the first mixed team in the Karrimor

Mountain Marathon. The local pair took part in the 41 kilometre race, held in the Galloway Hills of Scotland last weekend, with Simon struggling with a broken finger, but they had taken 14th place overall at the over-night campsite

and were the top mixed team. A night o f heavy rain turned two of the campsites into lakes, and

made for a bad night’s sleep for all 2,000 competitors. Day two began with a waist-deep struggle across a river, but the pair managed to amazingly gain an additional six places to finish eighth,

and they held on to the mixed team lead.
