FA Vase Final at Wembley in May, Clitheroe have been pre sented with a special plaque by the Football Association. The presentation was made

prior to Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Prescot Cables, and club officials proudly display the plaque, featuring the FA crest (left to right) vicechairman John Ilosty, jo in t manager Gary Butcher, secretary Colin Wilson, joint manager Denis Underwood and chairman Steve Rush.(CAT2363)

Boss delighted with unbeaten start C

LITHEROE boss Denis Under wood is delighted with his team’s unbeaten start to the season -

and his message to the rest of the league

is that his side can only improve! Speaking after Saturday's 2-1 win over

Prescot Cables at Shawbridge, he said: “We did well for the first 25 minutes on Saturday and it was probably the best football we have played all season. “We scored, created several chances and I was delighted with the way we knocked

the ball around. “But we lost big Jon Penman with a

recurrence of his hamstring injury, although it was a good thing we got him off quickly and he didn’t have time to

make it worse. “Hopefully he will be fit to play at Moss-

ley on Saturday. “We then conceded an equaliser and

seemed to lose our way a little. “In the end it was one of those games that

could have gone either way and we nicked it in the last five minutes with a goal from

Paul Mullin. “We have been very pleased with Paul’s

form and although he hasn’t played often with Jon so far. the partnership up front is a very exciting prospect. “With Dave Sharpies in behind looking to

supply the pair, we can only get better. “We haven’t looked unbeatable so far, and

we are still searching for the right balance,

but we are looking solid at the back and the goalkeeper situation has been resolved

with Lee Greenacre doing well. “There are a few areas that need strength

ening, but we have time to get it right with the results we have earned so far. “This time last year we were playing well and getting beat, but it is coming together

quite nicely now. “We have a tough test on Saturday at

Mossley though. “Last season they looked unbeatable at

home, but this season teams like Prescot Cables and Eastwood Hanley have done

well there and given teams hope. “The pitch was appaling there last season

and restricted our style of football, but I am told it is better this season.” Several of the sides with the Blues at the

top of the table were in FA Cup action on Saturday, and Clitheroe took full advan tage to move second: “It is always nice to have a cup run, but the league games pile up if you are involved in the cups and there is a lot of pressure to win your games

in hand. “We were in that position last season, and

this season we have been able to take advantage of the fact that-the top few teams are still in the FA Cup. “You can also pick up suspensions and

injuries with playing more games like last season, and we are more than happy to be

where we are at the moment.”

Mullin’s fifth strike saves the Blues

Clitheroe 2, Prescot Cables 1

A LATE winner from s tr ik e r Pau l Mullin sen t Clitheroe second in the

table, level on points with leaders Moss-

ley. In their eighth league game of the cam

paign, the Blues preserved their unbeaten record against a good Prescot side. Clitheroe took the lead as early as the

10th minute when the referee pointed to the spot after a push in the box on Mullin. Skipper Simon Westwell stepped up and

gave the goalkeeper no chance. The Blues suffered a blow moments later

when Jon Penman, back after a hamstring injury, was hit by a recurrence and was

forced to come off. Ian Pilkington replaced him, and was soon in the thick of things, going close on

several occasions. The visitors began to put the Blues under pressure and Lee Greenacre in goal was in

fine form. But Prescot levelled matters on 21 min

utes when Steve Baines ran down the left,

cut in and found the unmarked Peter Cumisky, who fired past the advancing Greenacre. Mullin should have sent the Blues in at

half-time ahead, but he shot wide with only the keeper to beat. After the break Prescot began to play the

off-side trap and Mullin and Andy Taylor were caught out on several occasions. Both sides were playing good football, but

with Neil Baron and Lee Sculpher in top form at the back, and the visiting central

defensive pairing also solid, the game looked to be heading towards a draw. However, with five minutes remaining,

Mullin rescued Clitheroe. Westwell launched the ball forward for Mullin to race on to, and the Blues’ lead ing goalscorer notched his Fifth goal of the season, placing the ball into the comer of

the net. Clitheroe: Greenacre, Sculpher, Thompson,

Baron, Westwell, Sharpies, Smith, Taylor, Penman, Mullin, Grimshaw. Subs: Barber,

Pilkington, Butcher. Reserves make it four in a row
