FURNITURE RESTORATION ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The knowledge that you have the patience to restore a battered piece of furniture to its former glory. WHAT WILL I LEARN?
How to assess what is needed to restore a piece of furniture. How to take off the old finish or revive the old finish. Repair any broken parts or joints. Surface finishing e.g. veneers etc. Reassemble the parts and glue up the
sections. Make decisions on what is the correct finish to apply to the restored piece. All developed by demonstrations and practice sessions.
WHAT WILL THE COURSE LEAD TO? Appreciation of fine furniture and how to look after it. To be aware of how to treat antique furniture without it losing its value.
MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT
Week 1 — A piece of furniture, fine wirewool, turps, meths, old clothes, glasspaper. For the whole course — It will depend upon the pieces of furniture the students bring. Materials such as French polish, Danish oil, wax polish, stains and fillers. All these can be bought but not until after advice on the first meeting.

COURSE CONTENT This course will follow on from the beginners course covering advanced machine techniques, intasia, skirts, suits, trying out new yarns and tech niques. The course will lead to a better understanding of your machine and a fuller use of all machine techniques (can lead to ULCI at Whalley).

POTTERY CRAFT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
No entry requirement but do not mind getting your hands covered with clay — it simply washes away with water.
WHAT WILL I LEARN? Firstly: practice in making simple shapes alter preparation ol clay, learning basic methods and techniques. The shapes could be useful or decorative.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
Work on the potters wheel. Development ol basic methods and techniques, and practice of glazing and decorative techniques (one does not need to have previous artistic ability).

SEW A BEAUTIFUL ROOM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Ability to use a sewing machine and preferably to have access to one. Previ ous experience of curtain making, etc. would be an advantage but not essential. Some preconceived idea of which room/s are to be co-ordinated.
WHAT WILL I LEARN AND HOW WILL I LEARN IT?
Cushion covers — styles and techniques. Curtains — varying styles and headings. Light shades (if required). Duvet covers, pillowcases, bedroom accessories. Kitchen co-ordinating accessories (if required). Austrian blinds/festoons (if required). Introduction to colours and co-ordination of colours and designs — all based upon simplicity of style and co-ordination. Weekly demonstrations if possible.

UPHOLSTERY ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A basic knowledge of, and interest in, sewing and home furnishings.
WHAT WILL I LEARN AND HOW WILL I LEARN IT? The preparation and making up of soft furnishings, including curtains, various types of blinds, pelmets, loose covers, lamp shaefes, Austrians, duvets and covers, and upholstery items including stools, chair seats and small fireside chairs. All by the preparation of samples, demonstrations, visual aids and student participation.
MATERIALS Week 1 — bring basic sewing equipment, i.e. scissors, thread, needles, pins, tape measure, V2 yard curtain net or light curtain fabric for sample desired.
Whole course — various fabrics, threads, yarns or upholstery fabrics can be bough personally or obtained from tutor and patterns can be borrowed from tutor.

SPINNING AND DYEING ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Complete beginners and those with some experience are welcome.
COURSE CONTENT You will be taught to spin wool, first on a drop spindle and then on a spinning wheel. The processes of sorting and choosing fleeces, carding, plying, washing will be included. We shall move on to worsted spinning, spinning of other fibres e.g. cotton, linen, silk, camel etc. using the yarns produced, adapting and designing knitting patterns. Some dyeing if possible. The course opens many avenues of study. Using handspun yarns for weaving (tapestries etc.), embroidery, lacemaking. Experimentation with fancy yarns, exotic fibres, etc.
MATERIALS
Week 1 — bring an apron — any equipment you already have i.e. spindle, cardrs, wheel, fleeces. For course — A drop spindte. Equipment may be borrowed to be used during lessons and can be bought.

CARVING COURSE REQUIREMENTS
You need only the desire to create something in wood to your personal satisfaction. Skills will develop as you proceed through the course. WHAT WILL I LEARN AND HOW WILL I LEARN IT?
Use woodworking tools correctly and safely. Develop a feel for the beauty of wood. Sharpen tools by demonstration and practice. The various forms of carving. Develop ideas and create carvings from personal involvement. Course will develop through demonstrations and practice to draw out individ ual qualities. Once the basic skills of fool manipulation have been mastered, the couse will unfold to show and develop the various aspects of carving. It is the time for the student to develop his or her own talents in the way they want to go. The course will lead to a deeper understanding of the craft in pariicular, and a greater understanding ol crafts in general.
MATERIALS REQUIRED Week 1 — Yourself and a piece of wood for practice and, if you own some,
carving gauges etc. but not essential in the initial stages. Whole course — A creative desire, pencils, notebook, personal ideas, a sense of humour and pieces of wood. Tools can be bought, but please wail until after the first meeting and get advice as money can be wasted in getting the wrong types.

POTTERY PAINTING ENTRY REQUIREMENTS As we are usually a mixed class (ability) it is not necessary to have any
knowledge ol pottery painting, bul ol course if a student is familiar with painting — it is also helpful.
WHAT WILL I LEARN AND HOW? By exchange of ideas, demonstrations and discussions about natural forms, or abstract designs.

No previous knowledge required as the skills needed will soon be learnt.
WHAT WILL I LEARN? Flow to work pewter or copper if preferred, into useful craft items. This course can be lor the beginners or those that have worked pewter before. As the course progresses the standard ol work should progress and many skills connected to metal work will be learnt.
MATERIALS
All materials required to start the course can be obtained from the tutor at the beginning of term. Pewter cost C4 per sq. tt., copper about half this cost but only small amounts are required to start. All other tools fairly inexpensive.

No knowledge of dancing required as tuition will commence at beqinners level.
WHAT WILL I LEARN AND HOW WILL I LEARN IT? All current party dances will be taught, plus basics of all modern and latin dances and also popular sequence dances. Students will be taught on their feet in class groups, with good tuition and supervised practice.

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The only requirement for this course is an interest in learning and dancing English country dances.
WHAT WILL I LEARN AND HOW WILL I LEARN IT?
The students will learn how to dance traditional and modern English country dances from many different regions of the British Isles as well as the old colonial dances from America which have come back to us as contra and square dances. Figures and steps for each dance will be explained, some times "walked through" before dancing to music. Occasionally the more experienced dancers demonstrate a padicular figure or dance. All dancers are able to put their skills to the test at the many lolk dances, hoe downs,
