The course will lead to the study ol colour and advanced layout and possibly illumination.

BEGINNING PORTRAITURE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS


A little previous drawing experience is preferable, even if in schooldays (i.e. latent talent).


THE AIM OF THE COURSE To improve drawing ol the head. This is a practical course, with the opportunity to draw the head of a posed model. There is some teaching of methods of the use of watercolour by demonstration, also oil colour or other media as appropriate. The importance of learning from past masters is emphasised. Reproductions are studied and discussed — use ol books, slides, postcards and exhibitions. The course, il followed over a period of lime, will lead to improved drawing of the head — enabling the student to


eventually undertake a portrait commission and to have an increased under­ standing and appreciation of portraiture.


MATERIALS REQUIRED Week I — A4 or A3 block/pad of white cartridge paper, 2B or 4B pencil, putty rubber and eraser. Whole course — variety of paper, chalks, pastels, etc. Optional colour media: poster colours, gouache or other as appropriate: to be discussed.
