Would you like to make your own up-to-the-minute clothes, but lack the skill/ideas/conlidence? Our course aims to help you to design original clothes, to cut your own simple patterns tor them and to understand the basic technical processes involved in putting them together.

INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC


This Unil is designed for beginners with no experience or only a basic experience of either practical or theoretical music. We will be covering basic

You will be encouraged to communicate orally, and in writing, your ideas, knowledge, feelings and points of view as well as reading, enjoying and responding to literature. The final mark is all based on coursework and there is also an oral test which is separately assessed. Completion of both oral and written work qualifies as the GCSE equivalent.


MATHS (GCSE EQUIVALENT)


This Unit will help students to understand and retain mathematical knowledge, demonstrate mathematical skills and make use of these in problem solving and applying mathematical procedures. The syllabus is split


into two parts and completion of both stages qualifies as the GCSE equivalent.

SOCIOLOGY A A fascinating introduction to studying the way people behave in society by asking questions such as: How has the family changed? Why do people break the law? Why do so many able children fail at school?


REACH


Retraining lor Access to Community Work and Human Care. REACH is a one year full-time or part-time course lor adult returners who in some way are looking towards working with people — either as a new direction in life or to make further progress in that direction. The course aims to provide:


— Understanding ol the social context and techniques ol working with people:


— Updating and improvement ol general education;


— Opportunity to gain entry qualilications to professional training, or higher education or employment.


Each student's programme is individually tailored and contains a "core" ol interpersonal skills, work experience, group tutorial activities and Stage A Principles ot Care, as well as Open College Units chosen from: Sociology A Study Skills A, Psychology A, English (GCSE equiv.), Maths (GCSE equiv.), Sociology B, Psychology B, English Language and Literature B. There are no lormer qualilications required for the REACH course. The course takes place at various times between 9-30 and 3-30 to accommodate


parents with children at school. Creche facilities are located at Sandy Lane Accrington.

COMMUNICATION STUDIES STAGE B Whatever we do in our lives, in our work or our leisure, it involves communication. The way we talk, our body language and the way we relate to others communicate as much as what we say. The mass media — television,


radio, newspapers and the cinema — provide much of our entertainment. This Unit takes a close look at all these aspect ol communication. We will study communication as well as developing our communication skills. The course has a lot of practical activity and will be ol interest to any Open College students.

This course will give an all round understanding of the business world in respect of business decisions and the underlying accounting. It will include such topics as cash llow, break How analysis, limited companies


BUSINESS STUDIES


This unit will promote knowledge and understanding of business organisations and environmental factors influencing business decisions. Additionally students may choose options in accounting and finance marketing production and human relations.


ELECTRONICS


Includes an introduction lo DC and AC circuits, logic, lield-effect transistors, transistor ampliliers, stabilised power supplies, oscillators, operational amplifiers, systems and a project.


MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR


Technology: Work and Society; Theories of Organisation; Group Processes; Aspects of Individual Psychology; Managements ol Change; Industrial


Relations; Research Methods and Techniques will all be studied in this course.


FASHION DESIGN B


This popular course caters for students who already possess basic skills and who want to add a touch of originality to their designs. Come and learn about decorative techniques, fashion drawing (for the non-artist!), pattern cutting from personal measurements, making up garment, using simple processes and ways of presenting the finished results. The completion of a suitable podfolio of work will lead to an Open College 'B' Unit Certificate.


FASHION CONSTRUCTION B


This unit will be especially valuable to those who already have a basic understanding of design and construction. The course is project based and includes:


— an investigation ot creative technology — the design process


— awareness ol industry and the current fashion scene
