Crowds flock to the friendly show

THE farming commu nity turned out in force on Saturday for the Hodder Valley Agricultural and Hor

ticultural Show. It was a day to remem

b e r . The sun shone, crowds flocked to the pic turesque Dunsop Bridge ground and the event lived up to its reputation as “the friendly one.” Nine months’ hard work

paid dividends and there were sighs of relief as pre dictions for a fine day proved to be spot on. Unfortunately the warm weather brought with it a large contingent of wasps and a sting-in-the-tail for hard-working St John Ambulance volunteers, who were were kept busy throughout the afternoon. From i) a.m. until late

afternoon there was enter tainment for all the family. Slaidburn Silver Band

and Accrington Pipe Band provided the music, wres tlers toiled in the ring, Young Farmers pulled oil the rope in a closely con tested tug-o’-war, Bob Poole brought cries o f delight as he exhibited Ins collection of falcons, birds of prey and owls — and runners converged on the village for the annual fell race, a popular venue in the local calendar. In addition there were

trade stands, craft stalls, agricultural and horticul tu ral e xh ib its , shire horses, donkey rides, simulated clay pigeons, a pets’ parade and lots, lots more, adding up to a memorable day out in a beautiful setting. There were many stars

of the show, but one cer tainly made his debut in a way few could follow. B. Bristol and Sons’ Simmen- tal bull went on to become reserve champion — after colliding with a steward’s car! The B r is to l fam i ly
