A FEW broken saucers were happily the only victims when it was the men’s turn to make the tea at Whatley on Saturday. More than 100
people turned up to sample the culinary deligh ts of turkey salad followed by trifles, jelly and cakes, all prepared and served by the men of Whatley Parish Church. The men certainly
looked the part donning aprons and straw boaters, and completed their chores in style by clearing the tables ana even doing the leashing up. The Vicar of
Whatley, the Rev. Alec Harpur, introduced the idea about 10years ago, and it has become one of (he church’s most popular annual events. I t was held in
Whatley CE School Hall and was followed in the evening by a • concert organised by
Mrs Liz Colon. The vicar is pictured

YOUTH TOPIC
YOUNG people were the subject of a talk to Edis- ford Ladies, Clitheroe, by local youth officer Mr Geoff Jackson. He outlined the various
activities done at Trinity Youth Club. For the past seven years this has in cluded work at Calder- stones Hospital, where Mr Jackson takes groups of about 30 helpers each Thursday evening to meet residents. At Calderstones, the
locks Farm, still manages to go out and about and is a familiar figure to villa gers as she makes her shopping trips to Whalley. Sne also takes regular
bus journeys to Clitheroe to visit her daughter, Mrs Madge O’Bryan, who runs a .hardware shop in Woone Lane. The shop was the scene
of celebrations on Sunday, when a birthday party was laid on for Mrs Schofield, with friends and relatives popping m to wish her all the best. Clitheroe-born Mrs

THERE was something to smile about at the coffee evening arranged by the St Mary’s Scouts Parents Group and held at the Montague- Street home of Mr and Mrs Keith Lavender.
The event raised more than £100 for Group funds. The money came from a variety of stalls and an auction of goods afterwards. A popular buv were the leggy dolls, made at .Calder- stones.
The chairman of the group, Mr John N. Clayton, who is seated (front), presented a plant to Mrs Lavender, who is standing with her husband in the middle of the back row.
