•27.U r -W C ' j -V SKIPTON CANDIDATE
IT was always wrong, for politicians to think simply in terms of -votes.-Now;; it- is also becoming impractical
and -if the-, Conservative Party - is to govern Britain after the next General Election;’ this is a
lesson.that must be learned. J '
- This was the message given
to about 40 members of Wad-
dington.Conservative Supper Club by prospective Tory par liamentary-candidate for the
Skipton; division 'Mr' John Watson.1 - -
-,1- Paying his first visit-to the
village, Mr.-Watson told parfflL followers at. the Sun Inn t lw people rarely voted for1? party - because - they- agreed with' its particular policies. "They vote for it to stop the
other party. In fact, the Con servatives and Socialists have each won four elections over the past - 25. years. But they have found
it.increasingly dif ficult to carry the assent and positive support of the public. They capture votes, but not
'enthusiasm.. "Britain can only be gov
erned properly ifi the Govern ment of the day-has the confi dence of most people.- The present Government has not and will probably lose the next election as a result.’! There was a problem for the
Conservatives, however, said Mr Watson. Millions of people wrongly believed the "party could not’ rep re s en t the people’s interests..; 1 “ They believe we arc a
party simply for big business, cocktail parties and the weal thy suburbs of the: south east,” he said.: "I passionately believe that
our membership, ideals and- policies represent the needs of our society much more accu rately than our political oppo nents. We need to demons trate that truth. The party might still win more votes at the next election, but unless we give accurate representa tion we '.shall ’never last in history as a groat unifying party, capable once again of pulling Britain from the swamp of Socialist misman agement.’’ Chairman at - the meeting
was Coun. John Walmsloy. After several questions to Mr Watson, a vote of thanks was given by his namesake Mr John Watson.
A look behind the scenes
BOLTON-BY-BOWLAND young farmers were given behind the counter -view of a bank when they visited the Clitheroe branch of National Westminster
on.Monday.- About 40. members were
welcomed by the manager Mr Jim Fielding, and shown round the premises by 14 of the employees. They saw the. various
machines in the offices includ ing the computer terminal in operation sending messages to the one at the Whalley branch. Arrangements for the visit
were made by Marjorie Harri son (computer supervisor), David Fulton (foreign work and securities) and Susan Robinson1 (cashier and stand ing orders clerk).
Talk way into final
FOUR Downham youngsters with the gift of the gab have won their way through to the final of a public speaking con test open to youth clubs throughout East Lancashire. And now the four, repre
senting the village youth club,. are busy practising for the final round which takes place next week. Members ■ of the - team are A n g e la W a lm s lo y , o f
Hookcliffe Farm, Downham; Richard-Harrison, of Pendle House, Twiston; Alan Cornall, of Laneside Farm, Mearley; and Sean Roney,- of West Lane House, Downham. .
They are hoping to make up
fo r disappointment in last year’s contest when they were disqualified'at the last-minute because o f an age limit infringement. 1 ■ ■ 1 r -
■ To • reach. the1 final, Dow
nham defeated teams from T r i n i t y Y o u th C lu b Clitheroe, and Longndge
Youth Club. The competition is run on a points basis with each team discussing a topic for 12 minutes in* front of a panel of judges. The Dow nham youngsters will be up against half a' dozen other teams in the final. . ■ ' •

THE causes and consequ ences of the Ice Agcweredis- cusscd by Mr. George M. Heyes, of Padiham; at a meet ing of. Clitheroe Naturalists.
Mr Heyes, who has made a
study of geology in connection with the Burnley coalfields, described how the landscape has changed over millions of
years. . Using colour slides,.he " - . • . '
showed what the land would have been like millions of years ago when tropical for ests covered this area. He d<$cribed the types of animals living then and how they changed as the Ice Age advanced. Mr Heyes said that the River Calder origi nally flowed into the River Aire, but when the ice melted, its way was blocked and it had to cut a way through the land between Whalley Nab and
Clerk. Hill. During this period much of
the land to the east of Pendle Hill was carried away by the melting ice. This had enabled the advent of opencast mining in the Burnley area. Mr Heyes also showed
slides of various pits and the machinery used to extract the
coal. He and projectionist Mr B.
Oddie were thanked by Mr Frank Harrop.
For party- funds
A FILM show and buffet sup- p e r h e ld by Bolton-by- Bowland, Sawley and Gisburn Forest Conservative Associa tion in the Village Hall 'at Bolton-by-Bowland madeia profit of £40 for party funds. The f i lm , shown and
narrated by Mr John Rickard, was called “Painting in Pend- leside,” He also showed slidqs of his holidays in the Lake District. He and his wife were thanked-by Mr A. Wright.)! . Members of the committee
served supper and a competi tion was won by Mrs J. Mai- Queen, Mr R. Howard Mrs H. Pickard.
