in the early stages but could not stop Aspinwall (L) from opening Oak’s account with what proved to bo the first goal of a hat-trick. Clegg put Lions level only for Aspinwall to make it 2-1. That was how the teams
turned round and Aspinwall was on the mark again within minutes, seizing on to a ball which had spun off a defen der’s foot. Lions hit back with a Chat
burn goal from an acute angle and with this encouragement th ey became much more dangerous. Bishop supplied the equaliser with a fierce, shot and Turnbull headed them into the lead from Chat-

WINNER King’i: Arms 3, Chatburn 2.
BOTH sides settled down well with Chatburn going ahead through a penalty goal from Holgate after the referee ruled that Scott had pushed. The effect was to spur King’s to greater effort; they produced some
good football and had the visitors’ defence at. full stretch. It was no surprise when Smith equalised and minutes later a well-executed move by the 'forwards resulted in the same player giving King’s a half-time lead. Chatburn pressure paid off with
an equaliser from a Holgate free- kick and the play became tense until King’s pushed forward. Eventually, they netted the winner through Rod Taylor, who safely put away a pass for Peel (R). That was algo the end of the scoring in a thrilling game which was a credit to both teams and amateur football in general. Out standing for King’s Arms were Scott, Smith and Ray Taylor and, for Chatburn, Hargreaves and Holgate. King’s Arms: O’Neill, Blenkin- ship, Penman, Taylor (Ray), Scott, •

RIBBLE: Valley Schoolboys crashed out of the national schools football trophy, losing 8-1 in a third round match against a powerful team from Manchester. ■ The game, at Great-. Har
wood’s Wood Street stadium, was a rather one-sided affair — but the local lads put up a c r e d i ta b le performance against a team with so much , man-power from which to choose. With the first half just five
minutes old, Manchester struck their first blow and it became increasingly obvious that they were superior in most departments. By half-time the score stood
at 5-0 and a massacre was on the cards. But to their credit the Ribble Valley team rallied and grabbed a penalty goal through Pratt to give them' some consolation. In tho Ribble Volley term) were:

Waddington in driving seat
Waddington 5, Settle 1. WADDINGTON at once settled
themselves firmly in the driving seat when Whiteside volleyed the ball into the net from a cross by Ross in the first minute of this Craven Cup second reound game. The secohd goal came 20 minutes
later, Foreshow heading in Wad-' dington’s free kick. The villagers were so much in command on the wet and slippery surface that it seemed to be merely a question of how many they would score. How ever, despite the bright start they could not convert the many chances created, partly due to some superb goalkeeping by the visitors. On the stroko of half-time Wad-
dington had cause to regret their wasted chances when Settle scored
with their first attempt of the game. Play continued to follow the open
ing pattern with Waddington doing all tho attacking but still unable to score. Ainsworth had one effort dis allowed and then Settle hit the post with their second shot so far. Finally in the 80th minute, Ross
ended the frustration by heading home Waddington’s third goal and

A new youth league
THE Ribble Valley looks all set to have a new youth foot ball league which will kick off next January. The idea has been proposed
on the cards
by Whalley Rangers — the team which has just resigned from the Accrington and Dis trict Boys' League after a row over the fielding of school
players. The row led to an extraordi
nary meeting at which it was decided to introduce a rule banning school players from taking part in Accrington league matches, which are usually played on a Saturday. After the meeting, Whalley

, concerned the new rule would preclude them from choosing boys who also played for their respective schools. ’ .This would be unfair,
. their fourth year at school. Therefore teams from the Hyndburn area could select f rom more experienced
players, ■ ■The decision to resign from
the Accrington league was a sad one, said Mr Whittaker. "But we feel that to compete in a league so heavily weigh, ted in favour of a few teams is neither good for the game nor tho lads involved. “The new league would be
open to all players under the age of 16 on September 1st, and matches would be played on Sundays. “We hope the league can
start next January, and if we can interest six or more teams it would provide a fixture list until April, giving the new league a chance to overcome
teething problems. “Then-tho league , could be
extended next season and full programme drawn up." Already Mr Whittaker has.
received “strong indications" th a t enough teams are interested in taking part, and he has put the plan to Ribble Valley League officials. They will discuss the issue
at the next executive commit tee meeting a week on Tues day, and if there are enough teams to'form the nucleus of a league there are high hopes of tho go-ahead being'given! ' Mr Whittaker hoped teams
because the majority of schools in the Hyndburn area did not run teams for pupils ip
