CLITHEROE came close to gaining their first away win of the season at Atherton Collieries. But they were thwarted by alate penalty and had to be content

with a point — their third in successive away games. —

Reserves concede a silly goal

Clilheroc Res. 2, Chapmans 2

THE Reserves included new signing Tony Dobson, formerly with Chat-

bum in the Ribble Valley League, fo r the v isit of newly-promoted Chapmans. Eddie Preedy, who was injured in the previous game, was still unfit.

i The Reserves attacked straight

from the s tart but were caught out a f t e r 10 min u te s of constant p res su re when a long clearance found the, back four flat-footed and ■ Chapmans* cen tre forward ran : behind the defence to score an easy

goal. Undaunted, Clitheroe continued

to run the visitors* defence ragged but could not find the n e t Eyles headed narrowly wide from a Pinch corner, and Bush was only inches wide with a shot from an Eyles*, corner. Eventually a four-man move led to Pinch netting an easy equal iser, the lead coming shortly after wards when Johnson back-headed home Redfcrn’s free kick. Eyles caused the Chapmans defence all so r ts of problems, and Pinch’s steady front running was another thorn. Just before half-time, failure to

make a proper clearance led to the Reserves .conceding a silly goal — the goalkeeper had no chance to deal with a Chapmans shot that was deflected. After the change round the vis

itors had a completely different look about them and Farnsworth did well to turn a dipping,' swirling corner kick over the bar. Clithe'roe’s back four held up well under pressure and when the Reserves had the ball in the back of the net Walker was given marginally offside. Bush made the miss of the match

from only two yards and Drachen- berg placed a good shot narrowly

over. The game ended in a fine 2*2 draw

with neither side deserving to lose. Leach gave his usual immaculate display in defence while Dobson had a shaky first half but played well afterwards. Eyles had a sparkling first half and worked hard in the second. Clitheroc Res: Farnsworth, Dob

son, Sharp, Leach, Redfem, D. Eyles, Bush, Walker, Johnson, Pinch, Drachenberg. Sub: Cole- bourne. •

--------- -------— In te r rib le conditions

Clitheroe were the first to slip up when Beard was unable to control an awkward ball. It skidded past him and Ather ton’s Hilton shot home past t h e s t r a n d e d W i l l ie Houldsworth. . Clitheroewho were without

key defender Colin Monks, fought back and Tony Eyles combined with Keith Murray to give Paul McGuire1 a chance.

But McGuire was brought -

down just outside the penalty area, and from the resulting free kick Beard made amends to fire Clitheroe level. , •

' The rest of the first half was dominated by Clitheroe. David Gillibrand was having a fine game and new boy John Lynch,' formerly with Black-

' b u rn YMCA, proved his worth with some fine runs. After the interval, with

ground conditions bordering on the farcical, Clitheroe went ahead, David Crump scoring his first goal for- the club from a Murray corner. In the early minutes of the

second period Clitheroe enjoyed the best of things, with Eyles having a good shot saved and Bisby playing well in defence. Then came a stroke of bad

luck and against the run of play Atherton drew level. A low skiding ball shot

through John Lawson’s legs, deceived Crump, and found the Atherton centre forward Thexton, who was unmarked.. K e e p e r H o u ld sw o th brought.him down arid from
