Valley Couneil’sKlhief Execu tive Officer, Mr Michael Jack- son, told the Advertiser and Times that all being well the order would come into force from April 15th — Easter Day. Under the order certain

traders would be allowed to open on Easter Day, Whit Sunday and the following 16 consecutive Sundays. The order would apply to

shops selling food, toys, souvenirs, fancy goods, photo graphic requisites, books, s ta tio n e ry , photographs, reproductions, postcards and bathing and fishing require ments. Mr Jackson said that any

reorganisation we found that Sab d en and Ribehester already had the provision for Sunday trading. Introducing this order is an attempt to make Sunday trading uniform throughout the valley." “Traders are not compelled

to open, but if, as we envis age, the Ribbie Valley con tinues to attract more and more tourists, the provision for traders to open is always there," he added. To bring the order into

operation the council needs the agreement of more than half the shopkeepers likely to be a f fe c te d by Sunday opening. The council has written to

Ordered to pay firm £1,009

compensation

A MAN of previous good character who admitted stealing, cash from his employers was told by the Recorder, Mr Ian Webster, at Preston Crown Court: “It is a pity that, at the age of 47; you should dip your hands into your employers’ money.”

Blit, he added, there were

exceptional circumstances as it was obvious that James

Reginald Slater had been out of his depth in his job. Sla te r , of Pasturelands

Drive, Billington, admitted stealing £474.15 from West Cumberland Farmers Ltd, Wigan, and a further offence involving theft of £282.91. He also asked the court to con sider four other offences. He was given a nine-month

prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was also ordered to pay .'compensation totalling £1,009.94. 1 Mr William Heap, prosecut

ing, said that about 18 months before the offences Slater had got a job with the firm as sales representative, at its Wigan branch. He was engaged in the sale of agricultural pro ducts and cattle food. Mr Heap said the first

charge involved the sale of some barley to a Mr Holden, -who paid in cash and was given a false receipt by the defendant. The second concerned the

sale of fertiliser. Slater was given £400 cash and a cheque. He paid in. the cheque and some of the cash but kept the remaining £282.91. Det. Sgt Edgar Steele told

the court that Slater had been under stress . and that the introduction of 'computerisa tion in the accounts depart ment had caused confusion. He said that after the offences Slater had gone to the Isle of Man but had returned. “When lie realised that the police were looking for him, he gave himself up to an officer in the street in Preston,” he said. The Recorder told Slater: “I

sincerely hope-that as soon as you are fit you will go back to a job for which you are suit

able.”
