Youth club’s wide range of activities
IT’S all go, with activities galore, at Clitheroe's Trinity Youth Centre this winter.
As well as table tennis, bad
minton an d . snooker on the three, club nights, and discos every Friday, the centre has a thriving judo section, an up- and-coming football team, a prize-packed quiz league, a n-amme of feature films
and lots of trips out and about. There are now nearly 40
members in the 18-month-old judo section which has junior and senior sessions on Tues
day nights. A se rie s of fund-raising
events throughout the year by th e ju d o enthu s ia s ts has brought in enough money to buy a new £100 mat, which is currently being put to good
use. . , ■ . The 15ft. by 18ft. mat com
prises a dozen small rubber mats covered with a canvas sheet and held together by a frame of wood. I t may not sound very exciting, but for a small judo group it’s a big step forward from the coconut matting covered with an old canvas sheet which the group used in the past. Coaching is still carried out
by black belt first dan Mike O’Connor, of Worsthorne.
Trin ity’s football team is
currently on a losing streak in Division Two of the Ribble Valley Football League, How ever, the side made a good s ta r t to the season and trainer Melvin Edmondson, who runs sessions every Tuesday night, is. hoping for better things in
the weeks to come. Melvin is also organising
outings to ice rinks and there will be trips to the theatre and pop concerts.
Quiz league rounds take
place on Monday evenings, with six teams of three play
in g each other twice between
now and Christmas. Questions c o v e r sport, general know- ledge, news items, pictures and slides, with members o( th e winning team receiving record tokens.
With Christmas in mind and
the annual fair on Saturday, December 6th, members are busy making articles to eelL O n e , who works in a slaughterhouse, has bought a number of sheepskins and is curing them ready for sale.
A special feature in the
•New Year will be a disco- dinner for all club members rather than just leaders.
An innovation on the staff
side is an experimental junior leadership scheme. Four members who have already accepted some responsibility at the club are on a trial period as junior leaders,
They are given a little more
responsibility and extra train ing and club leader Gcolt Jackson said that the scheme should help prepare them tor full leadership. He added ua when the project gets into ns Stride there wilt be halt a dozen trainee leaders at any
one time. The four at present takmj
part in tho experiment Joan Wilkinson (16), ofTaibo, Close; John Burgess (18), oi The Crescent; and W
cntfj
Bowness (16), of Moor I all of Clithcroe; and Ian D bury (18), of Chatbum. Any young people »j»
would like to join Tnn..y Youth Centre or know ab o u t the wide range „! activities should contactG.oi. Jackson at the CareersOll
Wellgate (telephone 25063).

INDUSTRY may be in the doldrums and the pound in your pocket worth less and less. But at least one section of the economy, is booming — the burglary business. L a s t y e a r in Lancashire
alone, police dealt with 8,372 burglaries. In England and W a le s 483,832 burglaries were reported, an increase of 23 per cent over 1973. Only 34 per cent of these crimes were solved and the goods were recovered in .fewer cases. The average thief is rarely
interested m a major theft, th ey want cash and goods which can be sold quickly. Police say they are likely to
be young teenagers. The big gest problem is case of entry into a house — but once inside they will always find some thing worth taking.
POSSIBLE Insurance claims for thefts
from homes rose by a stagger- m g4 3p e rc cn tla s ty e a rto to p
the £13m mark for the first
time. A British Insurance Associ
ation spokesman says: “Some of this increase was due to the higher value of possessions, but the upward movement of sums insured always lags behind inflation, and so the figures %o represent a _ real
deterioration in the situation.'' ATTENTION
I t should be possible to cut
down your chances, of being bijrgled by following a few simple precautions.
• Alwsyslock up the house
even if you are only visiting a neighbour..
your house without pro identity.
« Do not make life.-*:;- for thieves by leavmg'uni1-
• Do not let anyon '
