Now we also have Meme Ar t, where this ‘ar t’ is just pure meaning with very little aesthetic. There is so much of it now I wonder who is actually buying this; as once you have seen and read the message, why would you want to see it on your wall every day. I hope this type of ar t is just a brief trend and will pass. Another cur rent trend is Graf f iti or Street Art and again this is not something that many people will want on the wall of their living room for years, but there seems too much of this scr ibbled words or collages, being produced and for sale. However,


I do see the same pieces in ar t galler ies month af ter month, so it does not seem to sell well.


What does sell is ar t that is inspired by, or a tribute to past master s. Like a band doing a cover ver sion of an old song


this goes down well and that’s great. Most major ar tists are inspired by other ar tists - Francis Bacon by Picasso, Lucian Freud by Rembrant, David Hockney by Matisse etc etc. Also a lot of Artists today are still painting in the Impressionist style star ted by Monet and his contemporar ies and still forms the major ity of Landscapes available to buy in High Street Galler ies; because people still enjoy that style and want it on their wall and no modern style has bettered it yet.


The ar t wor ld is changing again and there are a lot of collectors who have bought new ‘statement pieces’ of ar t in the last 15 to 20 year s costing 7 figures, that are now suf fering losses if they try and sell.
