Andrew Salisbury, entomologist and Head of Plant Health at the RHS, said: “Using our updated pollinator list to determine which are best for the conditions in your garden and on a local level is so important if we’re to help reverse the decline in UK pollinator numbers. We wouldn’t be surprised to see the likes of marjoram and sea holly becoming more popular with gardeners owing to their structure, resilience and pollinator appeal.”

Plants for Pollinators is searchable on the RHS Website and denoted in garden centres by those plants bear ing their little bee logo. Also well wor th investing in a copy of Gloucestershire’s own Rachel De Thame’s book ‘A Flower Garden for Pollinators’ – a fabulous read f rom one of this country’s botanical best.

Call me “old-fashioned” (and I am!) but you can’t beat a Buddleja – tough as old wellington boots and a butter f ly buf fet which pulls out all the stops. I have started to acquire a few dif ferent cultivars, f irst of which was the classic ‘Black Knight’, followed by ‘Pink Delight’ which tends to have a more lilac tone, but still delightful all the same. Def initely wor th considering a couple for a sunny spot in your green plot.

While Plants for Pollinators has expanded, 14 plants have been removed f rom the list as a resul t of a new methodology that

incorporates literature reviews

and work ing group observations. Those removed include spider f lower (Cleome hassleriana), cigar plant (Cuphea ignea) and sweet sultan (Amberboa moschata). These all still provide sought af ter summer colour but al ternatives

pollinator -f riendly logo include hollyhock , cornflowers and California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) which I absolutely adore for its vibrant orange display still flowering away well into September.

Whatever you do this autumn, make sure you get a buzz from making your patch perfect for pollinators!

that will mar ry colour and car ry the 123
