HUGH CORNWELL

AN UNDENIABLE CREATIVE FORCE

65

Hugh Cornwell’s name will undoubtedly be prominent among the list of influential figures that have shaped the modern musical landscape, according to future historians of music. As a trailblazing musician, songwriter, and performer, his profound impact continues to resonate in the music world.

Hugh's presence is undeniably significant. Hailing from Tufnell Park, North London, he attended school alongside another renowned musician, Richard Thompson, before earning a degree in biochemistry. Notably, he initially showcased his musical talents at restaurants owned by the esteemed TV chef Keith Floyd, who featured The Stranglers' iconic track "Peaches" on his food programs.

As leader of The Stranglers, Hugh was the main songwriter of all the band’s most memorable songs across ten stellar albums. Their 1977 debut album ‘Rattus Norvegicus’; featuring seminal songs Peaches, (Get A) Grip (On Yourself ) and more, followed by albums ‘No More Heroes’, ‘Black and White’, ‘The Raven’ and ‘The Gospel According To The Men In Black’ (which Hugh cites as his favourite Stranglers’ album) consolidated his stature as a unique songwriter and musician. Hugh stepped away from the band in 1990 after creating the band’s 10th album, but is still an undeniable creative force.

Fast forward to 2022, and Hugh's latest album ‘Moments of Madness’, is an album of acute, pithy, and witty observations and has received widespread critical acclaim. Hugh puts the success of his latest album down to his experimental style of song writing, something evident in ‘Moments of Madness’, with a reggae-style song. Whilst his hair may be greyer, there is still a youthful excitement to Hugh whenever he goes out to perform.
