And he’s obviously playing Oompa Loompa, which is quite unusual? Well, I didn’t see him as that because it was all CGI. So in reality he was a tennis ball on a stick that was like a foot off the ground. But it’s amazing, my favourite part of the movie is the physicality they capture, I don’t know how they did it. I really don’t know how they did it.

Paul King, the director, said that we have your high school rap alter ego Lil’ Timmy Tim to thank for you getting this role? Who in your life gets to see Timmy Tim the most? No-one [laughs]. He’s locked away deep into a corner of the digital footprint and in a deep, dark part of my mind. [laughs]

Had you seen the original two films before taking on this role? I very much had to watch both of them back. I love both those films and those are tie-ins. And this is really like a companion piece to the Gene Wilder film, in Paul’s words. And it wasn’t something that you explicitly keep in mind when you make the movie, or when I made the movie, but yeah, it’s super heartfelt, super heart- warming. And Paul’s the rare director that can make these heart-warming films and be at that really crazy high level.

Which of the original movies was your favourite growing up? I love the Gene Wilder version, the Gene Wilder version I saw first,

technically, that’s the one I grew up on.

And how about the Johnny Depp version? That came out when I was like 10 or 11 years old and I thought it was very bold.

Do you think this is a Christmas Movie? I do think this is a Christmas movie because I think it’s joyful, it’s hopeful, it’s fantastical, it’s huge. David Heyman is a producer on this and obviously he didn’t direct it, but the films he does like ‘Harry Potter’, they are these huge world-building movies - and this is one of them.

Quick question - If you were going to make a Chocolate, what superpower would your Chocolate have? I would like to make a chocolate that turns you into a square. [laughs]

Finally, you have so many fans around the world who will be going to see ‘Wonka’ what is your message to them? Yeah, keep dreaming, don’t let anybody tell you ‘no’. Follow your dreams.

Thank You
