But you managed to pull it off, or did you fess up? It pretty much paid for college. So yeah.
We must try and find that commercial? Please don’t! Please don’t! [laughs]
There has been some discussion about the toxic female image of Bridget Jones. What do you think about it and how has it changed in the last two movies? That’s really interesting. I was not aware of those conversations, but we were just talking earlier about her self-scrutiny. And I never perceived it as her punishing herself in some way or trying to, yeah, punish herself into fitting and matching some social paradigm about beauty, what’s considered socially acceptable in terms of your presentation. I never thought there was anything wrong with her. I’d always thought of it more generally as a representation of how we pick on ourselves about things that are entirely of no consequence - because she’s not an overweight person. And she’s cute and there’s nothing at all wrong with her or her experiences or where she is.
It’s just that relatable sort of universal experience of being afraid that you won’t measure up. And how does that manifest in each of our lives? It’s not specific to her tearing herself apart physically. That, I think, is more about how each of us has our own thing that we like to focus on. And I don’t find it toxic, in my opinion.

I think the way that she manages it is funny because she’s self-deprecating in a way we hear that voice in our own heads about whatever it might be. But her optimism, she’s never defeated by it, she’s self-scrutinizing and self-deprecating - but she’s laughing. And she finds a way through whatever it is, and triumphs in the end - despite the execution of things not going to plan. And I think that’s inspirational. It gives everybody permission to be
who we are and to feel like, ‘Yeah, I don’t have to get it right. And I can still be happy, and I can still get the guy, and I can still do well. Even if it looks messy on the outside, I’m still good at what I do. And I’m still apparently cute enough for these handsome men to want to share my life.’ You know?
Bridget Jones dates a younger man in the new film - Why is this still something people talk about in this day and age? What’s your take on that? Yeah. I wonder why it’s a novelty? People are talking about all the films that are showing this dynamic, you know, as the central relationship in these films. And yeah, I wonder why the novelty? Because we were talking about all the songs that have been written about it, because this is nothing new in society [laughs]. You know? ‘Mrs. Robinson’, ‘Me and Mrs. Jones’, ‘Mad About the Boy’. Yeah. I mean, we could go back to ‘Harold and Maude’ if you want to. [laughs]
Finally, there are a lot of Easter Eggs in the Bridget Jones film for all the fans, with references to the previous movies - Did you detect many of those while you were making the film and did you have any yourself? Well, I don’t think that the intention was ever to use nostalgia as a device, as a contrivance. I think it’s the familiarity of things that we’ve shared with Bridget Jones since the beginning that have made its way into this chapter of her life now. And why wouldn’t they? We all keep photographs in our house that represent a particular time in life, on the refrigerator, children at a younger age, friends in your twenties, clothes. I still wear the same clothes that I wore 25 years ago, and I love them [laughs]. You know, things like that. And, also, I think Michael’s [Morris] intention was to give that wink, just to bring those warm feelings back of that connection that we felt to this character throughout the different chapters of her journey. You know?
Thank you.
