By Jonathan Gawthrop, Executive Director Wellbeing Sustainability & Assurance, EMCOR UK
This is backed up by a Business in the Community report2 which revealed that 41 per cent of employees developed mental health issues caused by work within the past 12 month. As well as sickness absence, poor mental health at work can lead to increased staff turnover and reduced engagement.
Recent and current events, such as the pandemic and cost of living crisis, are clearly having an impact on people. Plenty of those working in FM have felt this the most – many were working throughout the height of the pandemic, putting themselves at risk to ensure others could travel and work safely.

When FMs are tasked with supporting health and safety in the workplace, it’s typically to do with physical aspects, such as air quality, fire safety or grounds maintenance.
Mental health used to be much less of a consideration. However, that is rapidly changing as more and more companies come to recognise the
importance of supporting the mental wellbeing of their employees.

found that 37 per cent of respondents said that stress-related absence had increased in the last year. 28 fmuk
