While many people in the UK enjoy strong mobile signals at home, many large office buildings experience reduced connectivity due to construction materials, including thick concrete or stone walls, steel structures or the presence of metallised glass in modern buildings. Our research found that more than half of hybrid workers say that their mobile connection is better at home, resulting in 68% of workers being discouraged from coming into the office.

For employers focused on enticing employees back into the office, these stats are alarming. It highlights the growing need for businesses and FMs to rethink how the office can evolve to better support employee well-being and productivity, not hinder it. This is especially crucial with the increasing trend of mandated office work.

Infrastructure For An Office-First Future

The challenges highlighted by hybrid workers, particularly regarding mobile connectivity, reveal a critical area that needs urgent attention. As the demand for seamless transitions

between home and office grows, the

inadequacies in office connectivity become glaringly apparent. As we look to the future, the key trend shaping the modern workplace will be designing buildings with connectivity in mind and deploying mobile enhancing solutions within

them. Several strategies can be implemented, and it all starts with office infrastructure.

By working in partnership with telecoms providers, FMs can identify and address specific connectivity issues within office spaces, leading to tailored solutions that cater to the unique needs of each building. This includes installing signal boosters and distributed antenna systems (DAS) to ensure strong and consistent mobile signals throughout the premises, meaning employees can expect seamless mobile connectivity. These solutions are also useful to meet the growing demand for mobile data and supports the use of IoT devices in modern office settings.

Enhanced connectivity will not only boost efficiency and improve employee wellbeing but also justify the financial investments in physical workspaces. This approach ensures readiness to thrive in an office-first future, making the transition smoother and more beneficial for both employers and employees.
