any of us will be familiar with the myth of Icarus, son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the famous Labyrinth in Greek mythology. We know the story of how, in order to escape from the despotic King Minos of Crete, they fashioned together wings made from wax and feathers, and took flight. Icarus, swept up in the moment and lost in this new-found ability, failed to heed his father’s warning and flew too close to the sun, causing the wax to melt and him to plummet into the ocean below. Retellings of this myth focus on Icarus’ downfall, warning us not to extend ourselves beyond our own abilities. The intention is to paint Icarus as a fool, whose footsteps we would be wise not to follow. And yet, after the past year and a half, it’s not so hard to sympathise with the jubilation that would come with taking to the skies. Many of us have remained grounded during the pandemic as various lockdowns and travel restrictions prevented us from taking to the air, cutting ourselves off from far-flung family and friends. Even when travel is possible, it’s been a far more difficult process than usual. As an immigrant to the UK, though one who’s usually just a short flight away from family back in Ireland, this hits pretty close to home. As individuals, and as an industry, there have been moments of helplessness during the pandemic as we wait for governments to finally get Covid-19 under control. Thankfully, with the ongoing roll-out of vaccinations throughout much of the world, it seems that the light at the end of the tunnel is finally in sight. As we hope for some recovery in the second half of 2021, read on to learn about how airports across the world are looking for new ways to bolster their sustainability on page 16. We discuss the long road between the initial design of the Berlin Brandenburg Airport and its eventual opening on page 13, while on page 20 we take a look at the 7,000 or so routes that have been lost in Europe alone since 2020, and where we’re likely to see the recovery begin. Until then, we are all Icarus, our eyes on the horizon, waiting for our moment to take flight.
