A

year and change on from the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and I doubt many among us would have expected the conflict to have raged on for this long. From failed advances, short- lived mutinies and the ever-present war of attrition as both sides gain and cede territory, it’s proven difficult to accurately predict any aspect of this war. A year ago, the Bayraktar TB2 drones were hailed not just tank killers but as Ukraine’s saviour, for example – today, Russian air defences have relegated them to surveillance and reconnaissance roles. In many ways, the ongoing fighting in Ukraine is laying out the groundwork for all future 21st century warfare, and countries around the world are taking note. With tensions flaring between the US and China over Taiwan’s sovereignty, we look at the lessons the Taiwanese and US militaries can take from multinational training and cooperation between Ukraine and its allies on page 18.

Beyond these current conflicts, we also look ahead to technologies that may well shape the wars of the future. On page 21, we hear from the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) about its work on SAPIENT, an open software architecture of particular use in C-UAS missions. Similarly, we explore how armed forces are working to build trust between soldiers and AI systems, and the potential legal and ethical ramifications of using autonomous weapons, on page 29. In this day and age, certainty over anything is hard to find. Much could still occur between Ukraine and Russia, and between China, the US and Taiwan – and, indeed, between many other countries throughout the world. The lessons of 21st century warfare are being written and torn-up again in real time – however, it remains to be seen what will stick.
