Elastomers in the pharmaceutical industry

LAST Technology is developing a combi-machine capable of delivering a ready to be used (RTU) or ready to be sterilised (RTS) closures to the end-users, like rubber stopper manufacturers or pharma industries.

ubber-like solids with elastic properties are called elastomers. The elastomer is an amorphous polymer with viscoelastic properties existing above its glass transition temperature. Other properties make this component quite peculiar. Thanks to its hardness, tensile modulus, strength and compression, it undergoes large elastic deformations. It can be lengthened several times but it will reassume its own dimension once a situation of rest is recreated. Its primary uses are for seals, adhesives and moulded flexible parts. The viscoelastic properties allow the elastomer to contact and flow over the

surface of a container surface and apply continuous pressure to make an integral seal, which is the basis of their utility in drug packaging and delivery.

Demands on parenteral drug elastomer components are expanding with regard to particulate reduction, extractables and leachables, as well as functional performance. Such qualities must be known and controlled to be used properly. Once the elastomer component which is adequate for a drug product is identified, it is important to check the fit and function, as well as the physical and chemical properties that could alter compatibility throughout the lifetime of the drug.

To support this process, LAST

Technology is developing a combi- machine capable of delivering a ready to be sterilised (RTS) or ready to be used (RTU) closures to the end-users, like rubber stopper manufacturers or pharma industries. The processes consist of de-latching, washing, siliconising and drying the RTS elastomers or de-latching, siliconising, sterilising and drying the RTU elastomers, duly packed in bio-safe containers or bags. ●
