Delving into the TTJ archive, we look back at some of the issues and news affecting the timber trade in previous decades
QUEEN HONOURS TIMBER AND JOINERY BOSSES WITH OBE Timber industry executives Peter Latham and Roy Wakeman have been appointed OBEs in the Queen’s New Year Honours list. Mr Latham, chairman of James Latham plc, received his award for services to the wood industry, and Mr Wakeman, chairman and chief executive of the Performance Timber Products Group, for services to joinery and manufacturing. Mr Latham, who was “shocked and delighted” at the news, said that the precise reasons for the award are not given. But they are thought to be not only his leadership of Lathams, where he has been chairman since 2006, but also his contribution to the areas of timber sustainability and environmental certification. Roy Wakeman is widely recognised as a pivotal figure in joinery manufacturing during the past 25 years, recently embarking on an unprecedented third term as president of the British Woodworking Federation.
Since 2006, he has led the acquisition of a number of prominent joinery businesses as chairman and chief executive of the £20m-turnover Performance Timber Products Group. “This honour is a testament to his success and commitment to the industry and well deserved,” said BWF chief executive Iain McIlwee.

IRISH TRADE HAMPERED
1992
The Irish timber industry is being held back by a lack of government strategy and poor co-ordination between sawmilling and forestry sectors, said George Kidney, president of the Northern Ireland Home Timber Merchants’ Association, and a director of the Balcas Group.
Speaking at the organisation’s annual lunch, Mr Kidney said that forestry departments in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland were keener on maintaining prices than supplying what the market wanted.
TTF LODGES PROTEST OVER NIKON AD
2002
A television advert for Nikon UK has raised a storm of protest from the timber industry and the TTF has lodged a complaint with the Independent Television Commission.
The advert shows a timber yard with the caption “The last rainforest”, which the TTF says is “a clear implication that the timber industry is responsible for tropical deforestation and that the world’s rainforests are about to cease to exist”. “This ad is based on a complete distortion of the facts.”
