West Fraser completes Georgia Pacific South Carolina OSB mill acquisition
West Fraser Timber Co Ltd has completed the acquisition of Georgia Pacific’s (GP) idled OSB mill near Allendale, South Carolina. West Fraser originally announced its plan to acquire the mill at the end of October. idle since late 2019 and has an estimated stated capacity of approximately 760 million ft2
. West Fraser intends to invest
an estimated US$70m of additional capital to upgrade and optimise the facility in preparation for its restart and this upgrade is anticipated to take approximately nine months to complete.
The mill is expected to directly employ approximately 135 people and be one of the lowest cost mills in the company’s OSB portfolio.
Sweden sees increased demand for prefab timber construction The construction sector in Sweden is
increasingly turning to prefabricated wooden elements, according to Rickard Brännman, project manager at Flens Byggelement.
Flens Byggelement delivers prefabricated wooden elements throughout Scandinavia and uses Metsä Wood’s Kerto LVL for its prefabricated roof elements. “Our customers often require specific properties, such as long spans, low U-values and low deflection, and Kerto LVL is an excellent choice,” said Mr Brännman. Flens Byggelement now plans to invest in a new production line to increase the production of Kerto LVL elements in

order to meet the customer demand for prefabricated wooden elements. “It will enable us to expand our production capacity significantly so that we can meet the market demand better and more flexibly,” said Mr Brännman. Flens Byggelement supplies Kerto LVL- based roof elements to large Swedish construction companies such as Skanska and Veidekke. Skanska aims to be carbon neutral by 2045. When it began constructing a new assisted living facility north of Södertälje, in Sweden, it decided to use prefabricated wooden elements made by Flens Byggelement, with Kerto LVL used for the roof elements.
The first of these – JASPR – is a wooden screen wall, which is composed of LED display units covered with patented translucent wood. The product on display measured 4m2
.
“JASPR is ideal to design custom screen walls or to make partitions with integrated screens, revealing through ‘shy tech’ the beauty of wood and displaying images only when needed,” said the company. Woodoo also presented LIGHTR, a wall lighting solution covered with wood. “LIGHTR’s modularity allows the lighting to be integrated into a wall covered with Woodoo SLIM, our patented translucent wood, but also to become a unique decorative lighting object to enliven an interior.”
point for the market entry of the Mayr- Melnhof Holz Group into Scandinavia. “We are looking forward to a rewarding co-operation and the mutual exchange of experiences,” said Richard Stralz, CEO of Mayr-Melnhof Holz Holding.
“Mayr-Melnhof, with its family roots and impressive track record, is a great long- term majority owner for Bergkvist Siljan,” said Ulf Bergkvist, chairman of Bergkvist Siljan.
Bergkvist Siljan was created during the merger between Siljan Group and Bergkvist-Insjön in 2019. Ulf Bergkvist and Per-Ragnar Bergkvist will continue as part owners in Bergkvist Siljan, and will stay in their current roles as chairman of the board and market director respectively.
