he US hide market has experienced a mixture of stability and challenges during the early months of 2025. As of late January, the combined total of raw and wet blue hides sold but not yet shipped stood at 4,719,400, reflecting a 1.52% decrease from the previous week’s total of 4,792,100. Combined shipments of wet salted and wet blue hides during the same period rose by 16.67%, reaching 555,300, up from 475,900 the prior week. This indicates that while sales lagged behind slaughter levels, shipments gained ground as export markets began to show more activity. For the week ending 25 January, federally inspected slaughter reached 599,000, but combined export sales fell short of slaughter by 94,200 pieces. However, export shipments exceeded slaughter by 43,700 pieces.

The market experienced mixed results in February, with sales still trailing behind slaughter figures. In early February, the combined total of hides sold but not yet shipped decreased by 1.64%, totalling 4,556,900, while combined shipments of wet salted and wet blue hides fell by 6.85% to 519,400, down from 557,600 the

previous week. Federally inspected slaughter for the week ending 8 February totalled 584,000, with export sales of 442,700, which fell short of slaughter by 116,300 pieces. Shipments also lagged behind slaughter by 64,600 pieces, indicating continued supply chain imbalances. By mid-February, the hide market continued to show uneven demand, with 13 February reporting a slight rebound in the combined total of hides sold but not yet shipped, increasing by 2.1% to 4,653,300. However, shipments once again fell behind, totalling 478,300, a 7.91% decrease from the previous week. Federally inspected slaughter remained consistent at 561,000 for the week ending 15 February, but both sales and shipments continued to fall short of slaughter by substantial margins.

As the market heads into early March, the volatility persists, with slaughter levels still surpassing sales and shipments. Export figures for 22 February showed a significant gap, with sales falling 175,200 hides short of slaughter, and shipments 113,700 behind. This trend highlights the challenges the hide market faces in
