| Kleinschmidt Associates Our focus. Our passion. Hydropower.
FOR OVER HALF A CENTURY, we at Kleinschmidt Associates have been at the forefront of the hydropower industry, providing expert engineering, regulatory, and environmental consulting services across North America. With a blend of practical solutions and a deep understanding of renewable energy complexities, we have carved a niche in the water and environmental sector, working on projects that are as challenging as they are crucial. As a mid-sized, employee-owned firm, we leverage our technical expertise to tackle large, multifaceted projects. Our network of 12 strategically placed offices throughout North America facilitates close interactions and enhances our capacity to manage projects effectively across diverse locations while providing personalized attention and swift responsiveness to client needs. Our success is rooted in our ability to effectively manage the intricate balance between regulatory demands, environmental science needs, and cutting-edge engineering solutions. We staff our projects with seasoned professionals, ensuring that every project, regardless of its scale or complexity, is approached with the most knowledgeable insights and executed with precision. We have been helping clients navigate the regulatory process for more than 40 years, and our expertise has saved clients millions of dollars. We have managed over 125 projects through the complete Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) relicensing process. We know what FERC requires and how to keep the licensing process moving, having served for 10 years as part of FERC’s environmental contractor team.
We offer a wide range of comprehensive services. From feasibility and planning – assessing the potential of upgrading existing facilities and the viability of new project locations – to asset modernization and new facility engineering, we address every phase with a meticulous eye for detail and a comprehensive understanding of project interdependencies. We are also recognized leaders in pumped storage solutions, a growing necessity in an era where large-scale energy storage becomes vital due to the expansion of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. Our team has extensive experience in dam safety, conducting rigorous structural assessments and safety inspections to comply with U.S. and Canadian standards. Our hydrologic and hydraulic modeling capabilities further assist in predicting and managing the effects of extreme weather conditions on dam infrastructure, safeguarding communities, and ensuring regulatory compliance. There are times when the decision is made
to decommission and/or remove a dam due to structural, safety, financial, or regulatory issues. Over the last two decades, we have executed more than 30 dam removal studies, designs, and construction monitoring projects, which involved activities such as field surveys, hydraulic and hydrologic analysis, sediment management, conceptual to final design, and construction monitoring.
We also excel in fisheries engineering and biological consulting, with over 250 projects completed in the US and Canada. We have developed a reputation for excellence in the design of fish passage facilities, working closely with clients and regulatory agencies to devise solutions that balance ecological goals with operational requirements. Our multidisciplinary team of biologists, engineers, and regulatory specialists has successfully designed numerous fish lifts one of the largest nature-like fish passage project in the United States. In addition to our fish passage work, we have produced over 1,000 reports for environmental studies and conducted over 40 effectiveness studies. These accomplishments underscore our capability and dedication to advancing fisheries engineering and environmental conservation. We continue to be a foundation of innovation and reliability in the hydropower sector. By integrating advanced engineering, environmental stewardship, and regulatory expertise, we support our clients and contribute to the sustainable management and enhancement of North America’s water resources.
As the industry evolves, we remain
steadfast, ready to meet the future with solutions that are as sustainable as they are technically sound.
