Celebrating 100 years in hydropower at Hatch

Natural wonder of the world: Niagara Falls, Ontario

THIS GLOBAL ENGINEERING, project delivery, and professional services firm is proud to announce its centennial celebration in hydropower and dams. This momentous occasion marks 100 years since H.G. Acres and Company was established in Niagara Falls, Canada. Since acquiring Acres in 2004, Hatch has continued to honor this legacy by establishing itself as a leading hydropower and dams consulting-engineering firm on the global stage. “We are incredibly proud to reach this significant milestone in our journey,” said John Bianchini, CEO of Hatch. “For 100 years, Hatch and its predecessors have been instrumental in shaping the hydropower industry. We are excited to celebrate our achievements and look forward to a future where sustainable energy continues to play a vital role.” To commemorate this milestone, Hatch

recently hosted an industry event at the historic Niagara Parks Power Station. At more than 115 years old, the hydroelectric station, once considered the world’s largest at the time, has recently undergone a remarkable transformation into an immersive historic attraction for visitors. Reflecting on Hatch’s history, many of their designs at the time of construction represented firsts in the hydropower industry. Some of these historic projects include: Churchill Falls Hydroelectric Development, Canada, 1974—the largest powerhouse in the world at the time and still the world’s longest underground powerhouse. Alto Anchicaya, Colombia, 1974—the highest concrete-face rockfill dam in the world at the time.

Owen Falls Expansion, Uganda, 2000—the deepest excavation in residual soils for an embankment dam on one of the world’s largest lakes. Karun III Hydroelectric Project, Iran, 2005—the world’s largest concrete-lined plunge pool.

More recent projects include the Chacayes Hydroelectric project in Chile, the Palo Viejo Hydroelectric project in Guatemala, the Kariba South Extension project in Zimbabwe, and the award-winning Keeyask Generating Station in Canada. Hatch recognizes that there are still plenty of

hydropower sources available to be harnessed. However, much of the remaining potential is in remote locations and in more technically challenging conditions. We must develop innovative approaches and cost-effective solutions to overcome these challenges and harness the power of these remote sites. “Advances in technology and digitalization

are opening a new era of possibilities and opportunities. Small hydro is often economically challenged and requires cost-effective solutions. Repowering and refurbishing existing hydro facilities offer great potential to extend the asset life. Pumped storage is mainstream again, and hydroelectric power is supporting increased grid reliability. Climate change is driving flood management and flood protection project demand for hydro and dams expertise, that coupled with the number of global opportunities is making this an exciting time for the hydro industry,” says Jim Law, global director, hydropower and dams at Hatch.

With so much riding on finding new

sources of clean, affordable electric power, Hatch continues to push the development of innovative approaches and cost-effective solutions. They have expertise that spans the entire hydroelectric value chain including small- and large-hydro, refurbishment and redevelopment, greenfield developments, and pumped storage. With extensive business and technical

experience in the energy, mining, and infrastructure sectors, Hatch experts understand that industry challenges are changing rapidly. They are deeply engaged in the energy transformation from generation and storage to transmission in both the public and industrial sectors. They create unprecedented outcomes by collaborating to develop better ideas and apply their engineering and business knowledge to the world’s toughest challenges. Hatch draws upon their 10,000 staff who have experience in over 150 countries to challenge the status quo and create positive change for clients, employees, and the communities they serve.
