Protecting water-based power generation
A case study of how debris booms increase efficiency for power generation
THE MANDURIACU HYDROELECTRIC PLANT, located in the northwestern region of Ecuador, has partnered with Ecocoast to implement debris booms to enhance the hydropower plant’s operational efficiency. The plant, operated by Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (CELEC EP), has a capacity of 65 MW and utilises the Guayllabamba River, which averages an annual flow of 168.9 m3/s, making it an ideal source for sustainable power generation. The primary objective of this project was to
replace failing booms spanning 330 meters, preventing debris from reaching the generator. This measure was crucial for ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the hydroelectric plant.
Ecocoast’s debris booms are engineered
to prevent materials such as plastic, invasive plant life and wood from accumulating and blocking dams. Heavy floating objects can damage dams by impacting their structure, potentially weakening them. Furthermore, debris accumulation can obstruct dams’ sluice gates, reducing their capacity to channel water efficiently. This obstruction necessitates frequent cleaning, disrupts dams’ operation and increases maintenance costs. To address these issues and enhance the
installation’s reliability, Ecocoast proposed Bolina Log Screen Booms. These booms feature a subsurface mesh joined to create a seamless barrier for logs and debris, with full articulation between units. Known for their effectiveness in mitigating debris
accumulation, these booms are designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions while maintaining structural integrity. Bolina Log Screen Booms have been successfully implemented in major hydro projects worldwide, spanning across continents. Examples include Loc Quebec in Canada, Belena Dam in Spain and Kariba Dam in Zambia. These successful deployments highlight the effectiveness of Bolina Log Screen Booms in protecting critical infrastructure and preserving the integrity of hydropower systems. The implementation of Bolina Log Screen Booms at the Manduriacu Hydro Plant in Ecuador marks a significant advancement in improving operational efficiency and safety.
