include Paltronic 180 control and HPSC-Plus stability monitoring. Another highlight is the ‘Height & Bound’ feature. The height assistance limits the maximum working height, while the bound defines a 'virtual wall' that limits the work area. Once configured, the crane works worry-free beneath overhead obstacles or in confined environments. In Europe the knuckle boom loader crane is a key tool for house builders and for small to medium- sized construction. It transports materials to the site and unloads them, either to the ground nearby or, for longer-reach versions, to whichever part of the construction – upper storey or roof, or interior courtyard perhaps – that is needed. In the USA the boom-crane
truck frequently performs the loader crane role.

USA MARKET The reason is that space in the USA is, generally, far less constricted: on new and existing housing projects there is often room on the ground for a long boom-crane on its equally-long (or longer) truck to approach, manoeuvre its boom, and set down its load. The increasing reach of knuckle booms, however, now rival that of boom trucks. As such, versions designed for, and adapted to, the US market are appearing and making inroads in there. An example is a recent model
from Tadano’s PM range. Its PM Powerlift is a specialised range of truck-mounted knuckle boom cranes developed for the North American market and designed specifically for the delivery of wallboard panels. US housebuilding uses these components to a much greater degree than in Europe.
The range offers, Tadano says, a combination of power, lightness, and efficiency for intensive use in this sector. It is available in three versions with outreaches of 56 feet, 65 feet, and 74 feet (17, 20, and 22.5 metres) to meet different operational needs.
The range is available in
hydraulic and electronic versions. Both have radio control, with the electronic version offering a display for real-time monitoring. A proportional compensated
valve block is designed to give greater precision and smoother operation; the new PM Power Tronic system is designed to maximise safety and performance. Three stabiliser spreads —
