This November Cranes Today magazine will be 50 years old. To celebrate our golden anniversary we are raiding our archives to revisit some classic issues from the last 50 years. This month we return in time to May 1990… Tim Whiteman was editor of the May 1990 issue, with Quentin ‘Willimason’ (sic) as deputy and Nick Ratcliffe as ad manager. A young Trevor Pease is in the early days of his career, working on the title in classified sales. Pease is now COO of construction publisher KHL Group Americas and president of KHL's worldwide sales operation. The front cover shows crane and rigging services firm Barnhart building a 20,000 seat stadium in Memphis, USA. Dick Barnhart himself flew to


Memphis to oversee the complex job which involved multiple five- crane lifts. Barnhart’s fleet size was given as comprising just 24 cranes.


Inside the issue, latest Liebherr models include the LTM 1090 and LTM 1200, while British Ropes changes name to Bridon Ropes. There’s a preview for the Haydock show in the UK and a special report on Eastern Europe: “As the siege economies of Eastern Europe are replaced by free market economies, it is not necessarily all plain sailing for crane companies wanting to invest there…”
