consolidate Montevideo as a regional hub. This investment will allow for higher volumes, bigger vessel sizes and additional services at our terminal. Kalmar’s eco- efficient hybrid solutions will allow us to improve productivity at TCP while reducing equipment fuel consumption and CO2 emissions” said Kenny Pauwels, GM, TCP. The machines are scheduled to be delivered during Q3 of 2024. Konecranes also has a large presence
in South America and in its ports. In August 2023, CMA Terminals Fortaleza received delivery of two Generation 6 ESP.8 Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbour cranes. They will be used to build local container handling operations as part of the first stage of a port expansion project. CMA Terminals do Brazil is a subsidiary
of French company CMA CGM Group, which is a major global player in sea, air and logistics solutions. The new harbour cranes are part of a long-term development project to improve container handling efficiency at the Port of Fortaleza, which is

on the northeastern coast of Brazil and is becoming a regional transport hub rapidly growing in importance. “Highly efficient operations promote commercial development and increased revenues, strengthening the local economic and social infrastructure. Konecranes was able to offer us impressive technology for the fast and precise container handling we need to improve our productivity. We’re looking forward to seeing just how quickly the cranes can make a difference,” says Sergio Lima, CEO, CMA Terminals do Brazil. “We’ve been providing ports equipment
like RTGs and straddle carriers to other CMA CGM container terminals since 2005, but this is the first time they’ve ordered our mobile harbour cranes” said Alfredo Canibano Ramos, senior sales manager, Port Solutions, Konecranes. “We are confident that they will deliver strong, consistent and long-lasting performance as the company continues to extend their container handling operations,”
The two cranes have a working radius
of 54 m and a capacity of up to 150t which means they can handle vessels up to post-Panamax class. In Fortaleza they will be used mostly for container handling, but they are flexible enough for project and general cargo if the need arises. A high classification doubles service life in container handling. The cranes use the innovative Konecranes hybrid drive, which is a modern eco-efficient diesel engine paired with ultracapacitors that can recharge using energy recovered from lowering and braking motions. This gives the power needed for peak performance while saving fuel on lighter loads. The system is part of Ecolifting, Konecranes’ continuous work to decrease the carbon footprints of their customers. South America’s economy, then, would
appear to have done slightly more than just woken up. At the very least it has got out of bed, got itself dressed, had a breakfast coffee or two and is on one of its newly- built metros and well on the way to work.
