Engineering Partnerships


Component Manufacturers are key in addressing global challenges in the crane industry


beyond the scope of their own design envelope. Components influence each other, and they may influence costs and revenues caused by the equipment as a hole far into their lifecycle. If requirements on crane systems change, it may be a challenge to the individual designer, to understand and benefit from all the available optimization potentials available through changes and advances in the components space at his disposal. Oftentimes, there just isn’t the time or the access to valuable expert knowledge to tackle this task. Malmedie is a veteran manufacturer

for drive train components in heavy industry, one of them being cranes. In its areas of expertise, the company has understood since a long time how to set standards in quality and design. In order to be successful in the future, the company permanently works to align itself with customer and user value. The company works closely with its


customers in their unique challenges so that they can successfully realize the value from their products. One of Malmedie’s oldest business partners needs to standardize his crane designs, in order to meet his growth ambitions. Within this context, Malmedie supported him to push standardization. Through our discussions, in many cases, smaller sized components could be selected, and the number of required Malmedie products to keep available for production and

In order to keep aligned with customer and user value in the future, Malmedie focuses on the two megatrends sustainability and automation. Products which align with these trends are called Evo Series products, where Evo stands for Evolution. EvoTorque for example is the improved Malmedie Safety Coupling, a torque limiter mechanically preventing E-stops or Snag events on container cranes to damage their ropes or gearboxes. It has lost 20% weight compared to previous versions, inertia is reduced by 50%. During typical operating conditions, this product is accelerated


and decelerated constantly. Inertia reduction helps to save energy during operation, and, more importantly, to adapt motor and brake sizing. All this makes our product more sustainable. In the past, safety couplings had


to be reset manually. This is a short procedure of a few minutes. However, if a crane is controlled remotely, or even automatically, there is nobody available for this task on top of the crane. Today’s EvoTorque features a purely mechanical reset, which renders the product automation-ready. Malmedie is working hard on further


Evo Series products. We will give an update on these at TOC Europe 2024 in Rotterdam.
