NUVIA | ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

precision measurement tools. Packages are leakage tested before and after testing to verify seal performance and containment of the contents.

defining all the relevant material properties, section properties, contact definitions and loads.

Thermal analysis Our thermal assessments confirm that packages meet SSR-6 requirements under both NCT and ACT. The package is assessed using either analysis software, physical testing,

or a combination of both to ensure: ● Packages remain handleable under NCT ● No loss of contents or shielding under ACT ● No formation of critical mass

Nuvia has developed a thermal analysis methodology for

transport container accident case analysis based on the use of ANSYS Professional NLT v17.0. The starting model typically is the Inventor design model which will usually be simplified using ANSYS Design Modeller after import into ANSYS – typically the full design will be de-featured to remove features such as small chamfers and fillet radii which do not affect the thermal performance of the container. Alternatively, the impact model of the container may be modified to make it suitable for thermal analysis.

Shielding analysis The radiological performance of transport packages is assessed to demonstrate that a package will remain within the limits for Routine (RCT), Normal and Accident conditions specified in SSR-6. We use tools like MicroShield, Autodesk Inventor, and MCNP to model and verify shielding performance. Our assessments ensure dose rates remain within regulatory limits, identifying and addressing any shielding weaknesses. If appropriate we will model the entire assembly using MCNP and produce a more in-depth assessment.

Physical testing We conduct rigorous physical testing to demonstrate compliance with SSR-6 impact and thermal requirements. Packages are instrumented with strain gauges and accelerometers and tested using high-speed video and

Manufacturing and supply chain management As Design Authority for several packages, NUVIA ensures that every manufactured article meets safety and design requirements. Our ISO 9001-accredited quality assurance programme, approved by regulators, covers the manufacturing, procurement, inspection, and testing requirements.

Factory acceptance testing and commissioning Before final release, we conduct full factory acceptance and commissioning trials where the package is fully tested to ensure that it meets the design specification.

Licensing support that simplifies compliance Navigating the regulatory landscape for radioactive material transport can be complex, but with NUVIA, it doesn’t have to be. As the Design Authority, we must ensure every package we develop meets the stringent requirements of IAEA SSR-6. Our team compiles all supporting evidence into a single,

robust Package Design Safety Report (PDSR). Once submitted, the PDSR undergoes a detailed safety review. If the case is substantiated, a Certificate of Approval is issued, authorising the package for public transport. For Industrial and Type A packages, this is typically certified by a Competent Authority (CA)-approved body. For FISSILE, Type H, Type B, and Type C packages, direct CA approval is required. With over 20 years of experience working with the UK’s DNSR and ONR, our Transport Package Team has built a reputation for excellence. Our procedures are so robust that the ONR has granted NUVIA the authority to self- certify our Industrial and Type A packages. As a recognised Key License Applicant, we’ve successfully

secured approvals for numerous packages, working closely with both regulators and clients to streamline the licensing process and get packages operational faster. ■
