PRESCRIBING POSITIVITY 37 YEARS OF DEDICATION: WENDY ERVINE’S LEGACY AT GORDONS CHEMISTS
Some careers shape not just a workplace, but a whole community. For 37 years, Wendy Ervine has been the heart of Gordons Chemists in Rathfriland, guiding colleagues, supporting patients and leaving a legacy that will last for decades to come
Wendy’s love of pharmacy began early, inspired by visits to her great-uncle’s pharmacy as a child. That spark grew into a lifelong passion for helping people. In 1984, when Gordons Chemists acquired the Rathfriland branch, Wendy joined the team as a teenager working Fridays after school. Just a year later, she began her pharmacy studies at Queen’s University Belfast.
In 1988, she made history as Gordons’ first pre- registration pharmacy student, mentored by Co-Founder Robert Gordon himself, an experience that set the tone for her career. By 1995, Wendy had become branch manager, a role she embraced with warmth, expertise and commitment for over 30 years.
Alongside her professional achievements, Wendy built a family with her husband Brian and raised their son Matthew, balancing it all with grace. Her passion for developing future pharmacists never
waned. Many of those she mentored as trainees are now managers themselves, continuing the culture of care she helped create.
After managing Rathfriland branch for over 30 years, Wendy chose to step back into a relief management role, gradually preparing for a well- earned retirement. Wendy's contribution,
knowledge, loyalty and impact remains everywhere, in the team she inspired, the patients she supported and the standard of service she helped set. While her role may be changing, her connection to the Gordons family and the pharmacy community will remain strong.
Happy retirement Wendy. HUGHES PHARMACY CELEBRATES 70 YEARS OF SERVICE
Hughes Pharmacy in Enniskillen has reached a milestone few family businesses achieve: 70 years serving local people. Owner Paul Hughes shared his pride that the pharmacy, founded by his late mother, Laura Joan Hughes, has remained a trusted pillar of the community.
Founded in 1955, Laura opened the pharmacy on Belmore Street, right next to their home. Even as a mother of six, she balanced running the business with family life, something Paul describes as remarkable.
He recalls how his mother often opened the shop late at night to help those in need. Over the years, the pharmacy has expanded services and adapted to challenges, including funding pressures and changing regulations.
Today, Hughes Pharmacy continues to play a vital role in local healthcare, offering delivery services and maintaining close ties with patients.
Paul calls the pharmacy a “labour of love” and a way to give back to the community that has supported his family for generations.
