ADVANCING HEALTHCARE: COMBATING ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE

As the world battles an escalating threat to modern medicine, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) stands out as one of the most pressing global health challenges.

T

he emergence of drug-resistant infections has cast a shadow over the effectiveness of antibiotics, once hailed as revolutionary

medical breakthroughs. The alarming release of antibiotics into the environment has fuelled the development and transmission of AMR, impacting both human health and the ecosystem.

The global impact: AMR on the world stage Antimicrobial Resistance has garnered the attention of the World Health Organization (WHO) as a top-tier global public health threat. With AMR ranking among the top 10 health challenges, its dire consequences are evident. In 2019 alone, bacterial AMR led to a staggering 4.95 million deaths, with 1.27 million deaths attributable to bacterial AMR in the same year, a crisis demanding immediate action. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has highlighted the environment's pivotal role in the development and spread of AMR, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions.

A leap forward: the minimized risk of AMR certification On World Environment Day, 6 June, 2023, a ground-breaking initiative was unveiled by the British Standards Institute (BSI) to address the growing menace of AMR within the realm of antibiotic manufacturing. Introducing the Minimized Risk of AMR certification, this innovative approach promises to revolutionize antibiotic production practices and contribute significantly to the global battle against AMR.

Responsible antibiotic manufacturing: a critical leap The Antibiotic Manufacturing Standard certification marks a monumental step in the pharmaceutical industry's journey toward sustainable and responsible antibiotic production. This certification signifies a unified commitment across the antibiotic supply chain to minimize the release of antibiotic waste emissions into the environment. This comprehensive approach serves to safeguard public health while maintaining the delicate ecological balance.

Collaboration for change: a shared vision At the heart of this pioneering initiative lies a collaborative partnership between the BSI and the AMR Industry Alliance. Comprising over 100 companies and associations from the life-
