SHINING A LIGHT ON HOPE

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is an initiative that aims to raise awareness and action to prevent suicide. It is observed on September 10 each year, with various activities and events taking place around the world.

deaths by suicide. The theme of WSPD for 2021- 2023 is “Creating Hope Through Action”. This theme reflects the need to empower individuals and communities to take action to prevent suicides and support those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts or behaviours. It also emphasizes the importance of hope as a key factor in suicide prevention, as hope can inspire people to seek help.

Suicide affects staff in the healthcare sector: • Doctors are twice as likely to take their own lives compared with people working in other professions.

• Nurses are four times as likely to take their own lives than people working in any other profession in the UK.

• Female nurses are more likely to take their own lives than their male counterparts.

According to Champion Health, the current cost of living crisis has increased financial pressures on staff, and employees experiencing financial stress have been found to be twice as likely to experience thoughts of suicide or self-harm.

Employers play a crucial role in suicide prevention. Colleagues and line managers can provide an important social and emotional support network, built on shared experiences.

Samaritans Scotland recently launched a new strategic plan to reduce lives lost to suicide. It believes the data shows a need for more resources to support suicide prevention in Scotland – and to act on those factors that may cause distress, or which might contribute to someone being at risk of suicide.

Danielle Rowley, Samaritans Scotland’s Influencing Manager, said: “Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy and there is still a huge amount of work to be done.”

“We receive a call to Samaritans’ helpline every ten seconds. It reminds us why we continue not only to be there 24/7 for anyone who needs a listening ear, but also to make real and lasting change to achieve our vision for a Scotland where fewer lives are lost to, and devastated by, suicide.”
