RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS AWARENESS WEEK
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions of people worldwide.
A
s Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week approaches from Monday 11 to Sunday 17 September, it's a critical time to raise
awareness about this condition, its impact on patients' lives, and the role of pharmacies in providing support and information to those affected.
RA: unravelling the basics Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy joint tissues, primarily in the hands, wrists, and feet. This leads to inflammation in the synovium, the lining of the joints, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling. Over time, if left untreated, RA can damage joints, leading to reduced mobility and affecting the overall quality of life.
Recognizing the symptoms Early detection and management of RA are crucial to prevent irreversible joint damage. While symptoms can vary from person to person, common signs include joint pain, morning stiffness that lasts for more than an hour, swelling, and joint warmth.
Understanding medication options
RA treatment usually involves a combination of medications tailored to the patient's condition and needs. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often recommended to manage pain and inflammation. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) target the immune system to slow down the progression of the disease.
Biologic DMARDs, a subgroup of DMARDs, specifically target proteins in the immune response. JAK inhibitors are the newest class of drugs used to treat RA. Like biologic drugs, these are ‘targeted’ therapies, which work on the immune response. It is important for patients to understand how these medications work, potential side effects, and how to take them correctly.
Lifestyle modifications Alongside medications, lifestyle changes can significantly impact the management of RA. Weight management, regular exercise, and a balanced diet can help reduce the strain on joints and improve overall well-being.
Supporting emotional well-being
RA not only affects the physical health of patients but also takes a toll on their emotional well- being. The uncertainty of living with a chronic condition, pain, and limitations in daily activities can lead to anxiety and depression.
Techniques such as mindfulness and relaxation exercises can contribute to better mental health. Offering a listening ear, providing resources for emotional support, and recommending counselling services can help patients and their loved ones cope with these challenges.
Looking ahead Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week presents an opportunity for us to make a meaningful impact on the lives of patients with RA.
By providing accurate information, emotional support, and fostering a sense of community, we can contribute to raising awareness, empowering patients, and improving the quality of life for those living with this chronic condition.
