Breastfeeding can be an incredibly rewarding experience, offering plenty of precious moments of bonding between mums and their new babies.
W
ith World Breastfeeding Day on 1st August, it is a timely opportunity to celebrate the importance of
breastfeeding and to recognize the crucial role we can play in supporting our breastfeeding mums.
Breastfeeding offers numerous benefits for both mums and their infants, providing optimal nutrition, immune system support, and a special bonding experience. The most recent Public Health Scotland statistics (2021/22) show that:
• A third of babies born in Scotland in were not breastfed.
• Just over half (55%) of babies were being breastfed at 10-14 days of age.
• Mothers aged 30-34 years (51%) were more than twice as likely to breastfeed (exclusive or mixed) at the 6-8 week review than mothers aged 20-24 years (23%).
• 63% of babies born to mothers living in the least deprived areas of Scotland were breastfed (exclusive or mixed) by the time of their 6-8 week review, compared to 31% of babies born to mothers living in the most deprived areas.
• Babies from minority ethnic groups are more likely to be breastfed than White Scottish babies. 90% of babies of Black, Caribbean or African ethnicity were breastfed (exclusive or mixed) by the time of their 6-8 week review, compared to 38% of White Scottish babies.
In our collective role as pharmacists, there are numerous ways we can help raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and support breastfeeding mothers on their journey.
Breastfeeding is a natural way to nourish infants and support their healthy development. For babies, it provides the perfect balance of nutrients, promoting optimal growth and immune system function. Breast milk contains antibodies, enzymes, and other essential substances that protect against infections and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Moreover, breastfeeding fosters a unique bond between mother and child, promoting emotional well- being and a sense of security.
While breastfeeding is natural, it is important to recognise it is not always easy! Many mothers encounter difficulties with latching, milk supply, or nipple soreness. By raising awareness of these
