self-storage operated as the core business at the address. Moreover, we have also ex- cluded any duplicates found as the result of sales, acquisitions, and consolidation, as well as those self-storage locations that are identified as not being of significant enough square footage to impact the market or sub-market in which they are located.
This does not by any means indicate
that there are fewer self-storage facilities in the United States. What is does mean is that, going forward, the Almanac will re- port specifically on facilities that fall within the new guidelines to better meet the needs of the professionals dependent on industry-specific data.
As the industry continues its incred-
ible operating performance and its evo- lution into a core asset in investment real estate, these variations in the definition of the supply-side econometrics will aid in the education of the broader market, pro- vide for an even better understanding of operational equilibrium, and equip opera- tors and developers with better data from which to benchmark new supply.
The Industry Profile Using the methodology above, Table 1.1 on the previous page indicates that there are approximately 41,443 facilities nation- wide with an average of 52,000 rentable square feet. This equates to an industry total of 2,155,036,000 rentable square feet.
The data indicates that Texas continues
to be the state with the largest number of self-storage facilities and the highest rent- able square footage. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Rhode Island has the least number of facilities (74), while New York has the least rentable square feet per person.
Table 1.2 reports the number of fa-
cilities by state along with rentable square footage of storage, the popu- lation, and the square feet of storage space per person. After Texas, California and Florida have the largest concentra- tion of storage facilities with 3,812 and 2,538 facilities, respectively. Likewise,
