the ownership and pride their employees take in their work. “I really enjoy working in a

business that is locally owned and operated and connected to the communities we serve,” says Kim Ryan of Aberdeen Management and Development, which manages all Arizona Self Storage-branded facilities. With 17 years of experience in the self-storage industry, Ryan rec- ognizes that serving your com- munity and customers goes hand-in-hand with how you treat your employees.

death, divorce, and moves. “We give a personalized touch while finding ways to create a solution for our customers during a dif- ficult time,” says Ryan. “It really is a self-storage solution; we are solving life’s problems and trying to guide customers appropriately for their needs. Our managers are professional storage consul- tants and that comes with years of experience in the industry. We earn a lot of customer referrals, which is the best complement we can receive.” As a company, Arizona Self

“Being a small boutique-style company allows us to

be a bit more nimble in the way we operate, adapt, and change, if necessary to provide the service our customers desire. We have an outstanding team of managers that make this possible.” At Arizona Self Storage, property managers are the face of the

company. “I always look at us as the support to them versus the other way around,” quips Ryan. “We empower our managers to really take charge of their own properties.” Ryan knows that standing out in the self-storage industry is hard,

but she believes her managers are key. “You are selling space, and the units look the same wherever you go,” she says. “What sets us apart is that we believe in people, and we support our managers. As a result, our managers provide the best customer service in the industry because they are happy with what they do. Our customers often tell us that our customer service goes above and beyond.” This service is most apparent, according to Ryan, in the way her

managers help tenants navigate a new rental, given that self-storage needs are often driven by stressful,

tions. In 2011, when Charity Storage was founded, Ryan knew it was the right fit for their business. “It is a fantastic way to give back as a company,” she says. “We were excited about the opportunity and jumped on it very early. It was one of those things that really aligned with our values.” When Charity Storage first came about, Ryan immediately

reached out to her managers to gauge interest. “It was impor- tant to get our managers excited about the cause. They’re on the front lines and doing most of the work,” she says. “They receive and store the items and make sure they’re organized and staged to sell for the highest amount. To get our managers more involved, we asked them to identify charities that were meaningful to them. We chose to limit to two causes to make the most impact.” Arizona Self Storage donates to Autism Speaks and the

Wounded Warrior Project. “I have a personal connection to autism as do some of our managers,” says Ryan. “It’s the same with Wounded Warriors; we’ve had managers, and their family members, who have served. This was our way to honor them.”
