the pay issue, but that’s a national thing we’re doing. The Federation is doing everything they can to fight that. We just keep pushing that. “Resourcing and pay are the things that wind people up because they are both hugely linked together. They also link in massively with morale and if we can improve peoples working conditions we can improve morale because obviously everybody wants to be happy at work. Police officers aren’t frightened of working hard. They want to feel valued” As a woman in the Federation, Tracy acknowledges the historic lack of diversity but is encouraged by progress. “Our Council is now almost a 50/50 gender split,” she notes proudly. “We’ve got a
female chair, female deputy CAPLO, and a female deputy Treasurer, and more women moving into leadership roles.” However, she sees more work to be done.
“We’ve made strides, but we need to keep creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels encouraged to apply and participate.” One common misconception Tracy confronts is that the Federation holds no real power. “People think we don’t do anything until they need us,” she says. “We may not have the power to change national policy overnight, but we have the expertise to help officers navigate the most difficult parts of their careers.” Whether it’s disciplinary issues,
welfare support, or just understanding the rules around mileage and meals,
Tracy believes Federation reps play a crucial, often unseen, role in supporting officers day to day. For those thinking about joining the
Federation, Tracy offers clear advice: “Talk to your local reps. Be visible. And most importantly, be ready to challenge upwards.” It’s not a role for the faint of heart, she
admits. “You need to be confident standing up to senior officers and advocating for your peers. You also need to be self motivated as the role requires a lot of autonomy. But if that’s something you’re passionate about, then get involved. Through her passion, presence, and
persistence, Tracy Mills is proving that the Federation is not a relic of the past but a vital part of the future of policing.
