these Uber drivers - bless them - have never had to take the Brighton & Hove Knowledge Test which all local hackney and private hire drivers here have to pass. Of course they have to stick to the route that Uber dictates. And guess what? Uber wanted to get rid of this local Knowledge Test stating “SatNav is best!” Yeah right!


I was told another story by a local driver about a customer who had normally used Uber but had taken a Brighton & Hove hackney off a rank. During the journey the customer told the driver he was going the wrong way to whatever the destination was.


Well being a locally trained driver he got chatting with the customer and then found out that Uber was the normal choice of transport. The most wonderful point here is was that the driver was able to demonstrate to the customer that he was being ripped off by showing him a much shorter route. Another customer won over to the local trade.


We know that people have the right choose whichever cab service they want - and we absolutely agree that they are perfectly entitled to be ripped off with that choice.


FALSELY ACCUSED


A local Brighton & Hove private hire driver on Uber recently had a very bad experience regarding being falsely accused of inappropriate behaviour towards a female customer and was immediately suspended from the Uber system. Fortunately being a Brighton & Hove licensed driver, his vehicle had the council controlled CCTV which totally vindicated his innocence when downloaded and viewed by a Licensing Officer.


You would think that would be the end of it... but no... far from it. Even with the council’s licensing officer informing Uber that the driver was innocent of the accusation it took four weeks of to’ing and fro’ing and dealing with an endless amount of different Uber representatives each time for the driver to be reactivated back onto the Uber system.


OCTOBER 2021


So that was four weeks out of work over a false allegation by someone who was so evil that she could have cost this innocent driver his livelihood. On the basis that is did not get as far as the police this monstrosity of a person is probably still an Uber customer - unless Uber can deny this.

The ADCU also came down to the city to support the driver with an arranged protest at the Uber office here and it was really good to see such an actively involved union with such a great hands-on approach.


The main point here is that a Brighton & Hove licensed driver would never experience this from a local cab company because... well... they are all local and work very closely with the licensing officers - unlike a faceless entity.
