FACE COVERINGS

FACE COVERINGS MANDATED IN TAXIS AND PHVs THROUGHOUT UK

There has been conflicting information reported by various news channels regarding the mandating of face cover- ings in taxis and PHVs but PHTM has spoken to the Department for Transport.

This is what they said: 1. All passengers travelling in a taxi or private hire vehicle MUST wear face coverings – this is mandatory although please note that relevant exemptions will continue to apply for those with health, disability, or other reasons in line with the current face coverings on public transport regulations.

2. The penalty for failing to wear a face covering will now be £200 for a first offence, doubling each time to a max- imum fine of £6,400. This is in line with penalties for breaking the rule of six.

3. Children under the age of 11 and peo- ple who cannot put on, wear or

2. If the driver has asked, and the pas- senger refuses, then the passenger will be liable for the fine

3. Fines for businesses relates to offices, pubs etc which do not following COVID safety rules - NOT to our indus- try

remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impair- ment, or disability are exempt.

4. Taxi and private hire drivers DO NOT have to wear a face covering

** However PHTM recommends that drivers should wear a face covering when they have passengers in their vehicles.

What this means: 1. The responsibility lies with the passen- gers to wear a face covering, drivers can only ask or remind, not insist

4. There is no legal right to “insist” on seeing proof of exemption as it stands right now

5. Drivers CAN refuse passengers who don’t wear a face covering as this would fall under “any reasonable cause” for refusal

In the meantime we remind you to: 1. Be vigilante with hand washing / hand sanitiser

2. Clean your vehicle after every job 3. Take contactless card payments 4. Try not to handle cash 5. Do not let passengers sit in the front 6. Keep your window open a little
