NEWS...IN THE NEWS SHEFFIELD TAXI FARES GOING BACK FOR MONTHS
TAKEN ALL AT ONCE FROM ‘THOUSANDS’ OF ACCOUNTS
The online mobile payment platform used by City Taxis in Sheffield malfunctioned, resulting in payments for months’ worth of journeys, which had not been taken at the time, being taken from customers’ bank accounts all at once without warning. Thousands of customers in Sheffield and South Yorkshire saw money for transactions going back to July taken as a lump sum by the mobile payment platform AirPay. Cus- tomers were only notified when City Taxis learned of the issue from AirPay. A text message dated September 2 from City Taxis to customers using AirPay con- firmed the error the day after the money was taken. A spokesperson from City Taxis said: “Air- Pay’s global merchant bank named Adyen had an intermittent issue with a software hook that meant the platform showed as taking a successful payment when it hadn’t actually taken any payment from the cus- tomer’s card. “To rectify the issue AirPay ran a reconcilia- tion script to capture all outstanding payments, City Taxis contacted all of its cus-
tomers who had been affected, with the dates they had booked a taxi and the amount that was related to this date so they could reconcile their bank account to reas- sure them it hadn’t been taken twice. “It’s quite ironic and annoying that we intro- duced AirPay to offer the customer a
cashless option and an alternative to using the app, this became more prevalent during Covid-19 and the landscape we continue to face. Please be assured that no duplicate payments have been taken, Adyen and Air- Pay passed their apologies on for any inconvenience caused. ”
HALIFAX FIRM TARGETED WITH MALICIOUS COVID RUMOURS
Crossleys Private Hire in Halifax, winners of Airport Transfer Company of the Year in West Yorkshire, was recently targeted with rumours that their drivers had been infected with Covid. In response they had to put the following post out on their Facebook page. “This is to the person, people, company, companies that are spreading malicious rumours about Crossleys. Our customers are receiving text messages saying that Cross- leys has had a Covid-19 outbreak and all of my staff are infected.
Let’s get this straight! Crossleys has been going too long to start doing cowboy antics. All our drivers and office staff are tested on a weekly basis and only then do they come to work. I have your mobile number and have spoken to the licensing department this morning.” PHTM has sadly also heard of these tactics being used in other areas of the country and warns firms to be aware and report such matters immediately to your local licensing officers so they deal with it appropriately.
